Jay is found but his memories are lost - and it's unclear what he will do if they return.

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Taiyoh, Lin, Kai and Ken are called into Chief Bitou's office to hear news of information on Jay, who has been found after drifting ashore. As they head to visit him Chief Bitou tells them of the Mars Investigation Team, and how Jay is probably the first spacenoid - a human born in space. After returning to Earth after the mysterious loss of the mission he was put in an orphanage with his origins kept secret, before disappearing a year later. Marie Bitou speculates that Jay might have the same "natural survivor" instinct as Taiyoh. They arrive at the seaside facility where Jay is recuperating, but the boy is suffering from amnesia and is withdrawn. His doctor believes he is in a state of shock, and gives Chief Bitou the K-BOY that was found with him. It is still receiving a signal, which may be a clue to the whereabouts of Stealth Robo. Chief Bitou decides Machine Robo Rescue will be taking responsibility for Jay. On the journey back Jay asks to be let out of the car to observe the sea, and Taiyoh goes with him while the others head back to Rescue Headquarters to prepare for his arrival. Jay asks Taiyoh what sort of a person he was, asking where his family and friends are. Taiyoh skimps on the details but tells Jay he was a really good person before they are interrupted by a K-BOY message recalling them to Headquarters. While Taiyoh attends to the call Jay meets Zenjiro and instinctively helps him carry boxes; Satoko makes him a huge onigiri as thanks. However, he then overhears the other cadets talking - Makoto and Arias believe that Jay is their enemy still. Taiyoh explains the affinity he feels for Jay, while Kai also states he believes in the boy. However, Makoto storms out and runs into Jay, confronting him. He gives Jay a set of recordings of his actions for the Disasters before he is called away to the control room, where the team have located Stealth Robo. In the hangar even the Machine Robo have conflicted feelings about rescuing a former enemy. Meanwhile Jay watches the footage of himself in action, and is overwhelmed by the horror of his past actions, and saddened by Stealth Robo's sacrifice. In the control room the team find Stealth Robo's location - near a dangerous underwater volcano. Just then they get an alarm - Red Commander has been launchedby Jay, who tells Taiyoh he doesn't think he can stay with them any longer.

Makoto informs everyone he is responsible for reminding Jay of his past. Furious, Taiyoh sets off after Red Commander with Daichi. Makoto refuses orders to follow them, questioning if Jay has been playing them, before Chief Bitou tells him they instead should hope that he is trying to redeem himself. The chase is observed by Colonel Hazard just as Taiyoh and Jet Robo catch up with Red Commander. They dock with it and Taiyoh confronts Jay, who insists he must save Stealth Robo. Taiyoh believes it is too dangerous for him to do alone but Jay is resolute, believing it is his fault Stealth Robo is lost and he will save him at any risk, believing it is finally time for him to do something good. Their conversation is broadcast to the rest of MRR - including Daichi in Yellow Commander and Makoto in Blue Commander - just as they pick up faint signals from Stealth Robo. With everyone seeing the truth, Taiyoh orders them to form Machine Commander Robo, who plunges underwater. Stealth Robo is buried under magma, causing Miyajima and Sasaki to command a retreat - only for Machine Commander Robo to chide them for underestimating him and uses its' powers to clear a path to Stealth Robo. As more magma pours towards it, Machine Commander Robo is able to pull Stealth Robo clear and take him to the surface - only to be attacked by a trio of Gura Gorros. Jet Robo and Gyro Robo join the battle, though Machine Commander Robo is too drained. Jay tries to climb down to Stealth Robo but one of the Gura Gorros intercepts him, trying to reassert his Disasters programming. He activates Stealth Robo's emergency backup circuits and reveals he knows the Disasters have always lied to him. Stealth Robo blasts the Gura Gorro and Jet Robo and Gyro Robo deal with the other two before a stray shot knocks Jay into the sea. Taiyoh jumps after him, determined to save him, and both are caught by Jet Robo. Taiyoh tells Jay he is no longer alone and they both smile.

Continuity notes[edit | edit source]

Real-world references[edit | edit source]

  • The term "spacenoid" was famously invented for Sunrise's Gundam franchise, where it also describes anyone born off-Earth - the most famous being the anti-hero Char Aznable.

Continuity and plotting errors[edit | edit source]

  • Why Ken is taken along at the start is unclear as he's less likely to be sympathetic than - say - Daichi or Sayuri, having actually physically attacked Jay when they last met in "Ken's Rescue Spirit!". Considering the other trio are from Red Wings it seems probable Ace was meant to be in his place until someone belatedly realised he would likely have a strong reaction to Jay.
  • Even by Brad Bitou's laissez-faire approach and the fictional universe's treatment to precocious children his decision to immediately let Jay wander around the dormitory with no-one to protect him from the shocked attitude of most of the cadets simply so he and the instructors can find Stealth Robo as quickly as possible - moments after he's taken him from trained medical professionals in a safe environment and vowed to take personal responsibility for the boy - is incongruous.
