Daichi Hayami (速水 大地) is a human who works for Machine Robo Rescue as a member of the Yellow Gears, and Robo Master of Drill Robo.

Timid to a fault, the 11-year old Daichi overcame his early nerves and soon became a key member of MRR. Daichi's ability to instantly judge distances and angles with incredible precision made him invaluable, while his reserved and thoughtful personality provided some balance between the impulsive Taiyoh and inflexible Makoto. He also made a good team with the extroverted Drill Robo and soon found a kindred soul with team-mate Sayuri Suizenji.

Son of industrialist Yudai Hayami and actress Saeko Homura, Daichi had an almost suicidal attraction to dangerous situations as a toddler. I am the Mother of Daichi Later he was pushed into joining MRR by his wealthy parents, with his father in particular hoping it would make a man out of him so he could take over family business Hayami Heavy Industries. Daichi's Resolution During the first assembly of the MRR cadets he tried to persuade Taiyoh and Makoto to get along better, and later when Taiyoh took Jet Robo to help when a fire broke out at the Landmark Tower he sent his fellow cadet a plan of the building via K-BOY. Commence the Rescue Combination!! He was allotted to the Yellow Gears team along with Sayuri Suizenji, Ken Minami and Shō, with Marie Bitou as their instructor, with the group quickly getting along well. Blazing Fire Fighter! However, his nerves continued to overwhelm him, with Daichi regularly crying off drills with stomach complaints. After Drill Robo was unable to lift his spirits and his mother inadvertently only added to the pressure as he considered quitting, Daichi found a kindred spirit in Sayuri - who had also endured a materially privileged but emotionally poor childhood. The pair were left behind when Miyajima took the other cadets on a trip to an amusement park in Tokyo. When they became trapped on a subway train after a Gura Gorro attack. Thanks to a little nudge from Bone, Daichi found himself piloting Drill Robo into combat. After activating a ZONE and Drill's Hyper Mode he was able to drive off the attacker and save the rest of MRR before the subway train flooded. Realising that he had been too distracted during the actual rescue to worry about his stomach pains, he decided to remain at MRR. It's Party Time! Drill Robo He still struggled with the heights involved in climbing drills, however. The Thunderous Stealth Robo Daichi was however among the first to volunteer to help Sayuri find Laura, a missing cat belonging to a boy named Hideki. Emergency! Enter Battalion After his strong performance aiding those threatened by the eruption of Kaga Mountain, including using Drill Robo to repair defensive walls and precisely calculating how to use a trio of abandoned buildings to hold off the lava, Daichi was officially named as Robo Master of the Drill Team. Aim to be a Robo Master!

The Yellow Gears team were next called into action in Egypt, where Professor Murayoshi's daughter Saki had become trapped inside a pyramid. Daichi, Ken and Shō set off to rescue her with Sayuri providing backup from Gear Dump but the tomb's traps immediately separated the trio, with Daichi getting terrorised by some sort of automated mummy. Shō meanwhile found Saki and kept her spirits up despite being trapped under a wall, and Daichi and Ken were able to get to them - despite a Gura Gorro attack weakening the temple, which was held up by Drill Robo until the group got to safety. Daichi then used Drill Robo to vanquish the Gura Gorro, though the team then had to stay on and undo the damage done to the pyramid by the battle. Laughter Can Save the World! He was saddened when neither of his parents seemed set to appear at MRR's open day and chatted to Taiyoh about the latter's status as an orphan. When Daichi's father made a late appearance to see the staged Machine Robo battles, Taiyoh considered throwing the bout between Jet and Drill to make Daichi look better in front of his parents. Daichi found out and insisted Taiyoh use his full ability. Jet won, but Daichi noticed his father was proud of his performance nonetheless. And Taiyoh is Fine! The Yellow Gears were then sent to investigate strange vibrations at Marine Park but found the park's owner intransigent. Instead, Daichi and Sayuri paid for tickets to get inside, and there found further signs that something was wrong. The structure was actually under attack from a Gura Gorro, and once it stepped up its' attacks Daichi concentrated on evacuating survivors, while Sayuri headed back and activated Gear Dump Robo. The huge robot was able to stabilise Marine Park, allowing Daichi to get the remaining visitors to safety and activate Hyper Drill Robo - who soon defeated the Gura Gorro. Call Out! Gear Dump Robo

Daichi later tried to talk Drill Robo into convincing the unruly Submarine Robo to join the other Machine Robo in being quartered in Rescue Headquarters' hangar, though sadly the enthusiastic Drill Robo only succeeded in taking himself offline after forgetting that he wasn't waterproof. Do You Like Hangars? After Taiyoh and Jet Robo were knocked out of orbit by Jay and Stealth Robo in a battle near the spaceport Ikaros 1, Daichi aided in the rescue attempt. Good Luck Taiyoh He joined the other cadets in switching Taiyoh for Ace so the former could regain his shattered confidence and return to space on the reconfigured Shuttle Robo in order to rescue the captured Lin and Kai. Taiyoh Ohzora, Into Space! The mission was a success but when the Red Wings team moved on to the International Space Station, only to find it overran by mutated plants. As a result, Daichi joined Makoto, Ken and Alice in travelling up on the newly-completed Machine Commander, helping put down the angry vegetation with acid before the group continued on to the Moon. Save the Space Station! There they enjoyed a little downtime, which Alice filled with an impromptu staging of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, with Daichi cast in the title role. They were later called into action when a rockslide endangered the lunar mine Moonbase 13. Lunar Rescue, Begin!

Along with Sayuri, Daichi and the Drill Team were sent to combat a landslide which they later found out had been caused by the Disasters' new commander, Colonel Hazard. Enter! BL Machine Robo He gave a rare display of temper when a scrap between Makoto and Ace saw Sayuri accidentally knocked down, joining the fight in fury at their treatment of a lady - and getting hauled in front of Chief Bitou as a result along with the pair and the mostly-innocent Taiyoh. The quartet were then sent to South America to deal with the aftermath of an earthquake in Machine Commander. Daichi attempted to smooth over the still-tense atmosphere on the way there, but once they arrived the group were able to work better together, with Daichi's ability to judge precise angles vital in freeing people trapped in a damaged skyscraper. They later traced the cause of the earthquake to Hazard's Catfish, which was eventually destroyed when they formed Machine Commander Robo, also defeating BL Fire Robo. Combine! Machine Commander Robo Daichi later joined those holidaying at Sayuri's island mansion, and later summoned the Bulldozer Robo to form an EX Combination with Submarine Robo to help Ken raise a sunken pirate galleon. Summer Holiday! Fear Vacation Daichi was among those present when MRR were honoured at the Space Agency, and helped evacuate civilians when it came under attack from BL Drill Robo. His fellow cadets (and Miyajima, who had never bothered reading Daichi's records unlike his fellow instructors) finally found out who his mother was when Yellow Gears were tasked with supervising the stunts for the Ninja Mama movie. Saeko was clearly feeling some guilt over being absent for so much of Daichi's life and overcompensated considerably, not only doting on him and also finding her son and the rest of the team roles in the film. Sadly, thanks to the stunt-heavy style of director Hotta and producer Anao this was not much safer than rescue work. However, she bonded with Sayuri over their clear affection for Daichi. Things got more dangerous when Hazard - believing the title character in Ninja Mama to be real - targeted the shoot. Saeko was stunned by the danger Daichi faced as he tried to rescue trapped assistant Umeda in the midst of a Gura Gorro attack, but afterwards accepted the purpose he took from rescuing people. I am the Mother of Daichi Along with the rest of MRR - bar a fuming Alice - he wished Makoto luck for his date with Doctor Aki Saotome. After she died from a terminal illness, Daichi was among those present at a ceremony honouring her memory. The Story of Makoto's First Love Daichi and Drill Robo later arrived in Hinosuke to help rescue efforts when the town was threatened by a landslide. Proud Fire Brigade! Following an amnesiac Jay being taken in by MRR, Daichi was among the more open to the idea, and when Jay's memories returned he aided in the recovery of Stealth Robo from an underwater volcano. Be Reborn, Jay! He was later further supportive when Jay and Taiyoh went into action to free hostages trapped by Hazard and BL Drill Robo, following which Jay was accepted into MRR formally. Jay, Join the MRR! He remained sympathetic to the newcomer even when he struggled to conform with many of the MRR drills, including Sayuri's meditation sessions for Yellow Gears, pointing out that Jay had endured a difficult and nearly non-existent childhood. Birth! V Stealth Robo

At this point his father decided that Daichi's stint in MRR had served its' purpose, and feigned a serious illness to trick his son into taking over presidency of Hayami Heavy Industries. Daichi was conflicted, but after organising a welcome party for Jay and giving a heartfelt speech about how much his fellow cadets meant to him he resigned from Yellow Gears and took up the post. However, he immediately discovered that Gura Gorros were stealing material from the company, and they started fires in response. MRR were called in to help. After playing an active part in the rescue Daichi realised his heart was still in MRR, and after admitting he wasn't actually ill his father agreed, allowing Daichi to return to the organisation. Daichi's Resolution When the liner Poseidon collided with an oil tanker just off Rescue Headquarters, causing a freak subsonic noise that disabled the Leader Robo, Daichi joined Makoto in making towards the liner's control room, shutting down the engine and allowing Professor Suidōbashi to reboot the Machine Robo. Machine Robo Out of Action!

After Kaiser-G was able to activate and cut off a volcanic island from the rest of the world, Daichi joined the full-battalion response to the crisis. However, the Disasters creator soon proved equal to the combined Machine Robo effort to stop him, with Taiyoh and Jay seemingly lost. Activate, Kaiser-G! The rest of MRR were at least able to evacuate the island and went back into action to help those affected by Kaiser-G's messing with the Pacific volcanoes. When Taiyoh and Jay were able to make contact Daichi joined Ace and Makoto in recovering them, only to be confronted by Hazard and BL Police Robo. While the group were able to eventually destroy both of them - with Daichi's calculations vital to the destruction of the last of the BL Machine Robo - Kaiser-G had advanced to Tokyo, where he set the meteorite Tartarus on collision course with Earth. A Looming Catastrophe! The whole team set out to stop him but Kaiser-G was too powerful - while Daichi was able to use Hyper Drill Robo to open a hole in his forcefield in concert with Hyper Gyro Robo, Machine Commander Robo was easily forced back. Instead he joined the group of cadets who climbed inside Kaiser-G - declaring his love for Sayuri and his hope they would marry before leaving - and planted explosives which would give Shuttle Robo and V Stealth Robo chance to destroy it and the meteorite, saving Earth. All Hands on Deck, Save the Planet! The end of the Disasters didn't end the need for MRR however, and the cadets had to carry out several rescues on their graduation day - with Daichi and Sayuri drawing admiration from a police bomb disposal squad with their bravery as they used the Drill Team to dispose of some long-forgotten ordinance. Both of his parents attended the eventual graduation ceremony. Fly, MRR!

MRRE53-007Daichi.jpg

Following his graduation, Daichi left MRR for Hayami Heavy Industries - but only as part of a plan to support Chief Bitou's new International Hyper Rescue by helping Professor Suidōbashi design the next generation of Machine Robo. He even invested in a slightly less dorky suit. The first of said new generation, Air Leon, escaped during testing and headed to Rescue Headquarters. Sortie! Catching up with it, Daichi chatted about old times with Ace, Alice and Shō, now MRR instructors, and explained about the innovations incorporated in Air Leon. He later watched Sayuri, now Prime Minister of Japan, give a well-received speech supporting the ever-expanding International Hyper Rescue. Machine Robo Rescue Special - New Year's Day!

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Supplemental material establishes that Daichi's birthday is February 28th and he was born in Aichi.
  • It's not clear if he and Sayuri do indeed go on to marry but let's pretend they did as they seem like a really good match.
  • His surname does not seem to be a reference to franchise stalwart and voice acting legend Show Hayami, instead more likely being a reflection of what is a relatively common Japanese family name.
  • Similar to the situation with Taiyoh's name, as his given name can be translated to "Earth" it occasionally causes problems for translators when used in an unusual context, such as episode titles.
