Taiyoh may be a hot-shot Robo Master but a trip to a small town reveals he might still have some things to learn.

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Zenjiro and Satoko invite Taiyoh and Bone on a trip to a hot spring in Hinosuke as a family outing when they see a fire engine tear past to a blaze. Taiyoh watches as an elderly man snatches up the hose to fight the fire, to the distress of the two firemen. To placate the old crank they organise a bucket chain, a process which is a culture shock for Taiyoh compared with the methods of Machine Robo Rescue. The man insists on directing the hose until the fire is out - achieved shortly before the arrival of the main fire brigade. Taiyoh rejoins the Oigawas and they head to the springs - ran by Zenjiro's old pal Takezo Okano, the same coot who had taken over the firefighting. He explains that as the nearest fire station is in a different town he heads a volunteer local brigade. Okano is hostile to the idea of MRR, believing them to be a useless big-city rescue company. Zenjiro volunteers Taiyoh to join the local volunteer brigade while they're there, and he is taken out on a series of tough training exercises by Okano. Later Taiyoh complains to Zenjiro about Okano's attitude to Machine Robo Rescue, and the elderly man suggests they take a walk. There they visit a grave - that of Okano's wife and son Yuya, killed thirty years previously by a landslide during a typhoon. Heavy rainfall starts that night and Okano sets out to check on the town, with Taiyoh insisting on joining him. Okano soon realises that the river is likely to overflow, and sends Taiyoh to raise the alarm as mudslides begin to move towards the town.

Back at Rescue Headquarters the rest of the cadets are on standby when reports of the landslide in Hinosuke reach them. Chief Bitou orders the dispatch of Machine Commander with Police Robo, Fire Robo and Drill Robo onboard. In the town Taiyoh helps the firefighters as they hurriedly try to increase the height of the river walls while Taiyoh updates MRR via K-BOY. However, an avalanche then begins and Okano takes the other two members of the brigade to evacuate the town while Taiyoh continues work at the river. A freak arrangement of fallen trees is holding back the worst of the landslide as Machine Commander Robo goes into action. Drill Robo and Fire Robo are sent to work against the landslide while Police Robo and Machine Commander Robo aid the evacuation. Fire Robo and Ace begin pumping water away into channels tunnelled by Drill Robo and Daichi but the barricade of trees and rocks gives way. However, there has been time to evacuate the townsfolk to high ground. The river walls hold until a bridge collapses and threatens to cause a flood, but Machine Commander Robo arrives and is able to lift it clear in time - even impressing the curmudgeonly Okano. The storm passes, and Okano is delighted with Taiyoh, seeing something of his dead son in the the boy. Before he reunites with his team-mates, Taiyoh tells him Okano has him as a member of his family now - whether he likes it or not. This leaves Zenjiro to squabble with Okano over which one is Taiyoh's father and which one is his uncle. After the holiday is over, Taiyoh keeps in touch with Okano by letter, and he finds out that some of his training drills have been taken on by MRR.
