Kenryū (ケンリュウ) is a Machine Robo mecha from Cronos. Linked to the Wolf Sword and bearing a Wolf Emblem, it can be summoned by Rom Stol for the fights he can't handle alone but don't quite merit whipping Baikanfu out just yet. Kenryū is 3.33m tall and weighing 33 tons. He is sometimes called Blade Dragon.

"Wherever there is darkness, there is light... Wherever there is evil, there is also good!
The emissary from the heavens, Kenryū, is here!"

—Rom Stol summoning Kenryū

Fiction[edit | edit source]

Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos cartoon[edit | edit source]

ROCKenryu1.jpg

Baikanfu was a totem linked to the Wolf Sword, taking the form of a statue in Kirai Stol's cave retreat on Cronos. When Kirai was killed by the Gyandlar his Wolf Sword passed to his son Rom, who used it to summon Kenryū to battle them before the Devil Satan 6 and he had to call upon Baikanfu. Rising Storm - the Fighting Style of Justice!. A similar pattern of Rom calling up Kenryū to fight the Devil Satan 6 then needing Baikanfu to beat their combined form followed in Sado Fortress when Rom set out on a quest to find the secret of the Wolf Symbols Wolf Sword! Call Forth the Thunder of Courage!, when trying to find the Metal Laster in Vira Steal the Metal Laster! and when the travellers were lured to Sunsua Devil Trap - The Enslaved Village. When the group travelled to the north pole of Cronos, Kenryū scored a rare victory against the Gyandlar captain Zagam - though admittedly only as its' opponent decided to die in the absolute zero temperatures under the polar ice before Rom needed Baikanfu. Hot Fight at Absolute Zero! Kenryū was then summoned to fight Mizuchi but even through the Rock People made the robot the Shield of Justice it was still Baikanfu that had to finish the job. Leina Stol in Wolf Sword Legend OVAs[edit | edit source]

When the now-organic Rom was reunited with the Wolf Sword by Leina on Electronic Planet B-1, he was able to call forth a new version of Kenryū which more closely resembled a suit of armour and could fly. Along with Blue Jet, Kenryū attacked Velt Zaruk but was restrained in a ball of energy by the wizard. Rom then called up a new version of Baikanfu to dispatch the sorcerer, showing some things always stayed the same.Leina Stol in Wolf Sword Legend II

Toys[edit | edit source]

KenryuToyROC.jpg

Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos[edit | edit source]

  • Baikanfu (1986)
    • ID number: MRC
    • Accessories: small Wolf Sword, large Wolf Sword, Shield of Justice
Kenryū was released in Bandai's Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos toyline as the middle unit of the Baikanfu set. He can either be used separately, with a Wolf Sword scaled to fit in his fist, or merged together like a set of Matryoshka dolls, with the engineering allowing a certain amount of articulation to be carried through. The toy is an extensive retool of the DX Gardian from Popy's Chogokin series, specifically the Delinger module; while the complex mechanisms are largely unchanged just about every bit of robot has been resculpted. The Rom Stol figure from the set can be placed inside. Unlike in the anime, the figure's Shield of Justice is scaled to Baikanfu rather than Kenryū. Retailing at ¥6000, the set was one of the most expensive figures in the series.
  • The toy was never released outside of Japan.

Soul of Chogokin[edit | edit source]

  • Baikanfu (2007)
    • ID number: GX-39
    • Accessories: small Wolf Sword, medium Wolf Sword, large Wolf Sword, Shield of Justice, weapons stand
Kenryū was included in Bandai's Soul of Chogokin Baikanfu set in November 2007. As per the usual excellence of Soul of Chogokin, the Kenryū figure is highly accurate to the character's appearance in the anime and very well articulated, also having a scaled Wolf Sword of its' own, while also being able to replicate the original's ability to merge with Rom Stol and Baikanfu. The set's original RRP was ¥19,800. It costs a lot, lot, lot more on the second-hand market now, though.

ES Gokin[edit | edit source]

  • Baikanfu (2011)
    • ID number: 07
    • Accessories: small Wolf Sword, medium Wolf Sword, large Wolf Sword, Shield of Justice, Star Sword, sword holding fist, closed fist (2), open hand fist (2), spread palm fist (2), Kenryū closed fist (2), Kenryū spread palm fist (2), Rom forearm (2), Leina hair, light insert
Kenryū was included in Artstorm/Fewture Models' ES Gokin Baikanfu set in 2011. It is a super-deformed version of the character; despite its' proportions and small size the toy still retains the Pile Formation that is the character's trademark, being able to house the included Rom Stol figure and/or fit inside Baikanfu. The set also includes two alternate sets of fists for Kenryū and an appropriately scaled Wolf Sword. The set retailed at ¥8,800.

Pose+[edit | edit source]

  • Baikanfu (2020)
    • ID number: P+ 04
    • Accessories:
Kenryū was included in Artstorm/Fewture Models' Pose+ Baikanfu set in December 2020, designed by Awaken Studio. Like other toys in the range it is a mix of metal and ABS plastic parts. It is an all-new 6.5-inch tall figure with a high emphasis on cartoon accuracy and display, and can accommodate the set's Rom Stol and also nest inside Baikanfu as in previous versions. Kenryū has excellent articulation and a plethora of accessories, including a scaled version of the Shield of Justice. It is roughly in scale with Action Toys' Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos figures. The set retailed at ¥63,800 (around US$550) though, so don't get too excited.

Merchandise[edit | edit source]

Machine Robo Gum Model Kit[edit | edit source]

  • Baikanfu (Machine Robo Series, 1986)
A plastic model kit of Baikanfu was produced by Bandai in 1986. While this needed some assembly it straddled the line between a model kit and a toy, retaining a simplified version of the Pile Formation with plastic versions of Kenryū and Rom Stol. Some parts used chromed plastic, and while only two colours of plastic were otherwise used at least they were broadly accurate, while a sheet of stickers were included to help things along. It would, however, require painting to look like the back-of-box picture. The kit retailed at ¥200, and as the name suggests included gum.

Machine Robo Series Model Kits[edit | edit source]

  • Baikanfu (Machine Robo Series, 1986)
    • ID number: 3
A Snapfit plastic model kit of Baikanfu was produced by Bandai in 1986. The kit required no glue and featured large stickers for detail, though paint would be required to make it accurate to the toy or animation model. It included a smaller figure of Kenryū which could be placed inside Baikanfu.

Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos Choco-Corn[edit | edit source]

  • Kenryū (1986)
    • ID number: 3
A small plastic model kit version of Kenryū was issued by Bandai in 1986 as part of their Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos line of models, distributed with Morinaga & Company's Choco-Corn candy. Kenryū was a non-transforming figurine. The model very closely followed the look of the toy version, though the kit itself was cast in a single colour of plastic and would require extensive painting to look anything like the picture included on the leaflet. Like the rest of the range, the model retailed at ¥100.
The Choco-Corn figures were never issued outside of Japan.

GN-U Dou[edit | edit source]

  • Kenryū (2008)
    • ID number: 011
    • Accessories: Wolf Sword, Shield of Justice
Kenryū was included in Yamato's GNU-Dou range of licenced mecha in 2008 in a rare bit of solo attention. Made of PVC on an ABS skeleton, the 6" figure has exceptional articulation.

Super Mini Pla[edit | edit source]

Baikanfu was released in Bandai's Super Mini Pla line in March 2020. It is a highly detailed plastic model kit of Baikanfu, Kenryū and Rom Stol, all capable of nestling in the trademark Pile Formation. The model is pre-painted - and very expensive.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Thankfully for the sanity of all involved, Kenryū had no solo appearances from "Gather All Machine Robo" onwards, only appearing in the stock footage for the formation of Baikanfu. It's probably just a coincidence but the quality of the series also drastically improves from that point too.
  • Kenryū was named Force of Good in the French Revenge of the GoBots dub and Blade Dragon in Central Park Media and Discotek Media's subtitled American releases.
