Release years[edit source]

Is there a definitive source for which year an individual toy was released in? Counter-X's checklist jumps all over the place and doesn't match the years given in the reviews, so I'm at a loss as to how credible any of this is. Creedence (talk) 01:50, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

The Gobots year thing has always been a bit of a crapshoot due to the lack of catalogues. I corresponded with the Counter-X guy via email a bit back in the day and card/box backs are what are generally used, though obviously that just tells you when the card was made. However the problem there is that Tonka updated the year on these as they went on, so it can all be turned upside down if someone whacks a carded version of a figure with an earlier date than anyone else. Most confusion seems to stem from the way Gobots were issued - there were three series that ran 83-84, 84-85, 85-86, so working out where everyone belongs can be tough as the lines blended into each other. And by most accounts Gobots barely squeaked out in 1983; the best anecdotal evidence I've ever heard was someone who was 10 who had Turbo and Crain Brain for Xmas '83. I'm not sure rigidly separating them by year just because that's what's done for Transformers is necessarily the best idea.

Going by cardbacks from STA and Google:

83: Cy-Kill, Tank, Fitor, Cop-Tur, Loco, Turbo, Pumper, Hans-Cuff, L'il Spay-C, Scooter, Road Ranger, Dumper, Dozer, Geeper-Creeper

84: Nuclear BuggyMan, Rest-Q, Screw Head, Spoiler, Blaster, Leader-1 (!), Path Finder, Small Foot, Block Head, Flip Top, Scratch, Van Guard, Good Knight, Tux, Twin Spin, Royal-T, Smoking Crasher, Toon Blaster, Crain Brain, Slicks, Dive-Dive, Spoons, Night Ranger, Zero, Street Heat, Wrong Way

85: Toxic Cy-Kill, Toon Crasher, Eno, Fly Trap, Water Walk, Tailpipe (both), Stallion, Sky Jack, Man-O-War, Ace, Bent Wing, Bladez, Bolt, Bugsie, Bullseye, Dart, Gunnyr, Hornet, Klaws, Mr. Moto, Treds, Vamp, Pincher, Scorp, Creepy, Sparky, Bad Boy, Major Mo, Mach-3, Stinger

Some weird results there and I'm not sure how scientific that is, but there we go. Carry-All (talk) 16:20, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Further thought - might be able to classify them by the actual front of the cardback. Series 1 83-84 seem to have the eight-sided photo collage on the bottom right; Series 2 84-85 have the bottom right empty - aside from the card art - and Series 3 85-86 have the hologram sticker. Unless I'm missing something obvious that seems the most sensible way of sorting the regular Gobots at least. Will see about doing a sandbox in a bit and seeing how that looks Carry-All (talk) 11:49, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
