GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords was released on VHS by América Video, dubbed into Portuguese as A Balatha dos GoBots

Toys[edit | edit source]

Brazil definitely got Machine Robo/GoBots toys. However, it is unclear if either of the two lines were actually licenced from Bandai. Until confirmation can be found the GoBots Wiki is taking a conservative line and treating the series as unofficial.

Mutante[edit | edit source]

The more famous of the two lines was Glasslite's Mutante, first released in 1985. While Glasslite legally licenced some toy lines, notably Star Wars and Thundercats, whether they did so for Machine Robo/GoBots is less clear. The toys do not use any trademarks from either line, instead creating fresh names for the figures, and the packaging does not credit Bandai or Tonka. And the manufacturer stamps have also been changed to reference Glasslite. And one version of Zardos featured branding for Super Máquina, the Brazilian version of Knight Rider.

None of these things suggest the toys were officially licenced.

Typical of toys produced in South America at the time, they are also of lower build quality than their Western or Asian counterparts, featuring less precise paint applications and papery stickers. However, the line did feature some fun recolours, so at least they were trying. It also featured some very nice artwork, which seems to have been created especially for the line. The "As seen on TV!" blurb printed in Glasslite's catalogue seems to be in reference to a planned TV commercial to be animated by Brazilian animation studio Briquet Filmes animator Gustavo Machado, which does not appear to have gone beyond the storyboard stage. The line also included the Crash Tron, based on two figures from Fujisho's Powertron line, which were also issued in Brazil as the Transformers Bat-Robô, which hardly helps make it look like the company was dealing from a straight deck.

The initial 11 figures consisted of: -

A second batch of four more boring figures followed: -

Two larger figures were released, both based on the same mould from Zenmai Kahen Winch Robo: -

And while we're here in case someone finds the line is official, here are the Crash Tron toys...

Glasslite revived the line in 1999. This time the figures were all-plastic and featured different colours and a lot less detail. Again, not what you'd expect from someone who actually asked Bandai for permission. The rear of the card listed Extendor (an update of Ergor), Sonik, Demolon, Guardian (an update of Galian), Rotron, Flamor, Destructor (an update of Zumor), Megator (an update of Zardos) and Traktor; it is not currently known if variants were produced of any of these 'new' figures.

Convert[edit | edit source]

The second line was Convert, produced by Mimo. This largely featured straight copies of the originals, and only overlaps with Mutante on one mould - Crain Brain/Crane Robo. They were largely the same as their American/Japanese/European counterparts, just worse made - though the line did feature Onibus, a copy of the Double-decker Bus Robo mould that otherwise did not make it out of Japan. Again, the packaging featured no credit for Bandai.
