The Rock Lord Boulder led one of the few groups on Cordax who still resisted Magmar, though the battles had taken their toll on his Power Scepter, which had very little energy left. Nevertheless when Magmar marched on his stronghold Boulder led his troops in ambushing the invaders, and they very nearly won the battle until the intervention of the Renegades. Only a handful of Boulder's group escaped the resulting rout, and they were initially wary when they ran into the Guardians soon afterwards before realising they were friends. The allies avoided death in the Sea of Fire thanks to the Guardian Scooter and then trekked across the wastelands towards the Kingdom of Fossils. On the way they were attacked by Rockasaurs and Boulder was forced to use the last of his scepter's power to save his friend Marbles from being eaten. The group arrived too late to stop their enemies from taking the Fossil Lord's scepter but were able to successfully storm Stonehead and ultimately thwart Cy-Kill's plans to use the Ultra Scepter for galactic domination. Reunited with ally Solitaire he planned to redouble his efforts to defeat Magmar.Battle of the Rock Lords

The Good Rock Lords again teamed up with the Guardians on Quartex, with the groups working together to prevent the Renegades from stealing a statue from an ancient city. Boulder shot Cop-Tur as they drove the Renegades off but it was all a ploy - after both groups took the statue onboard the Command Center the statue was revealed to contain Magmar, Brimstone and Slimestone. However, Scooter and Nuggit were able to raise the alarm, allowing the Guardians and Good Rock Lords to defend themselves until Scooter was able to trick the bad guys into walking out of the Command Center and into space. Conquest of the Command Center! Later in the conflict with Magmar, Boulder and most of his troops were cornered by Magmar; thankfully Nuggit arrived with back-up from the Rockasaurs, giving the Good Rock Lords an opening to fight back and drive the enemy into the retreat. Rock Lords mini-comics[edit | edit source]

Tired of the threat Magmar posed to Quartex, Boulder led his troops out to attack Stonehead. However, they were ambushed by Magmar, who froze them in their rock forms with his new Cryon Ray. Only Nuggit - scouting ahead and clearly doing a bang-up job of it - escaped, following the Evil Rock Lords back to their base, where the Good Rock Lords were imprisoned in a cage. He was able to free them, allowing Boulder and his men to get free. Magmar again attempted to use the Cryon Ray but Nuggit had disabled it, so Boulder shot the whole group of Evil Rock Lords over with his Power Sword. Boulder then led them to freedom before reinforcements could arrive - leaving Magmar swearing revenge on Boulder and his followers. Powerful Living Rocks Face a Deadly New Peril He later visited the Jewel Lords at the Crystal Palace, where Solitaire and her comrades were working on a secret nuclo-crystal, perfected by Flamestone. Unaware that Magmar, Spearhead and Saberstone were nearby he left in his Rock Pot, and the villains attempted to take the nuclo-crystal. Boulder returned ahead of schedule with Marbles and Nuggit but was unable to prevent the Evil Rock Lords leaving with their prize - or so they thought, Sunstone having switched it with an illusory version. Go-Bots comic[edit | edit source]

Boulder was the leader of the Go-Lems on the forgotten planet Earth at the centre of Gobotron,Issue 3 and believed themselves to be built by gods and born from the Earth itself. The group mainly meditated to achieve a state of mind they called the Quartex. However, when Leader-1, Turbo, Scooter and the others searching for the Lazer Lance near Skull Rock came under attack from Magmar's forces the Go-Lems helped, with Boulder punching Sticks'n Stones before leaving. The group later appeared to aid the Guardians by opening up a chasm that swallowed up both Cy-Kill and Zod, calling an avalanche of rocks that gave an opening for the Go-Bots to finally destroy the monster. Toys[edit | edit source]

Rock Lords[edit | edit source]

BoulderToy.jpg
  • Boulder (Rock Lords, 1986)
    • Good Rock Leader
    • Rock Type: "Tungsten: among the toughest of all minerals, it shows durability and resolve."
    • Accessories: Power Sword
Boulder was released in the first series of Rock Lords by Tonka and converts from robot to tungsten rock in 7 steps. The figure was released in Japan as Battle Rock, one of the Rock Robo in the Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos toyline, with the inner robot colours changed to a tone closer to flesh; it is unclear which was the original release. The figure has excellent arm articulation and further movement at the hips, knees and feet which can be used for some good poses thanks to the figure's balance. His head really, really looks like it should turn. But it doesn't. Despite his accessory being named as a sword it looks more like a gun.

Robo Machine[edit | edit source]

In Europe, Rock Lords was a subline of Robo Machine. Boulder was issued by Bandai in 1986 with no significant changes.

Notes[edit | edit source]

The first Boulder prototype
The second Boulder prototype
  • The character was initially named "Granite" but swapped his name with, er, Granite.
  • The first prototype of Boulder featured a grey shell, orange detailing and a dark brown helmet, and was used by Hanna-Barbera as reference for GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords; the scheme was then kept on for most of his (scant) contemporary media appearances, albeit sometimes with a red helmet. The prototype also featured some sculpted differences, notably the 'bucket' on his back being partly filled in and a different head sculpt.
  • A second prototype was used on the toy's packaging; while closer in colour it featured the same sculpt as the first and thus different paint applications on the head.
  • The press kit for GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords describes him as the "rock equivalent of Errol Flynn". Presumably meaning more the swashbuckling on-screen version than the drug-taking sex maniac off-screen version.
