Synopsis[edit | edit source]

ROC322.jpg

With Emerald City in ruins and coming under frequent attacks from the Gyandlar, Rom decides to gather the cream of Cronos' warriors and draw the aliens into a decisive battle. Along with Leina, Rod Drill, Blue Jet and Triple Jim he sets out to recruit various old friends and allies before they find a battered Battle Rock named Mars in a forest and take him for medical attention in the nearby town[1], where the nurse Carma reveals he has been missing for a week. Mars has intermittent memories of being attacked by the Gyandlar; the travellers hang around as Mars goes back to his building work. Leina is almost killed by a falling iron bar on the site before Mars saves her; she's quite taken with Mars and visits him again at the site that evening. They chat but are ambushed by a Gyandlar squad lead by Diondra. She claims Mars is one of the soldiers in her army; this restores his memories of being captured and experimented on by the Gyandlar. Rom arrives to help but Leina is captured by Diondra; the stress of the situation causes Mars to suddenly turn into a mindless monster. Even Diondra seems taken aback but she is then transported back to the Varigale-X with Leina. Rom tries to reason with Mars but the Battle Rock prevents Jet from giving chase before running off himself. Rom follows him into the woods where he finds Mars back to normal and making more sense; Rom tries to persuade him to help by pointing out that they may be able to return him to normal if they defeat the Gyandlar. Mars agrees to help Leina - but only if Rom promises to kill him the next time he changes.

Mars heads towards the landed Varigale-X where he is met by Diondra and her troops. He demands they hand over Leina but instead she attaches a headband to him that will give the Gyandlar control of his rampages before Garudi threatens Leina, triggering his transformation. The Gyandlar unleash Mars - now grown to giant size - on the city where he causes a huge amount of destruction; Diondra has Leina tied to a pole to keep him angry. Fire Robo tries to bring the damage under control in Land Giant 32 but the Gyandlar Devils attack him until Missile Tank Robo helps drive them back, though Drill has less luck against Mars. Neither do Jet and his comrades, so Rom calls up Baikanfu to battle Mars while Jet rescues Leina. She pleads with Mars to no effect, and Baikanfu is forced to smash the crystal on Mars' chest to save her. With it destroyed, Mars explodes. A fragment of the crystal falls into Leina's hands as she mourns his death.

Notes[edit | edit source]

ROC323.jpg
  • Mars uses a modified Battle Rock model - as well as his chest crystal, he's basically got Cronos Tribe (i.e. human) head under the familiar helmet.
  • Big Trailer Robo is seen with a Tough Trailer container trailer.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Considering the complete disconnect from the plot and style of the episodes before and after this one - including the lack of any of the Emerald City crowd such as Pro Truck Racer or Tough Trailer – it could be that this episode was intended to be shown earlier in the season during the Wolf Emblem quest phase but held back and given a hasty introductory voice-over to hide the reshuffle.
  • Land Giant can talk! It's only a single line, delivered by an uncredited actor, but it clearly responds verbally to Fire Robo asking it to help as he climbs aboard.
