Has an experimental high-speed train launch ever gone well in anything?

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

MRRE17-018AliceMakoto.jpg

At Hell Island, Jay's master tells him there is no need to rush to destroy Machine Robo Rescue, believing first they must sow the seeds of destruction. Meanwhile in Tokyo the super-express line Takion is to be launched the next day at New Tokyo Station, with Blue Sirens assigned to oversee security. Taiyoh and Bone are watching the coverage until Lin switches the channel to a movie - and promptly realise that the film stars none other than Alice. She explains it was her last work before joining MRR. They are interrupted by a cross Makoto, who says Alice should have stayed an actress, believing she uses her skills to wriggle out of his tough drills and that he is wise to her. The next day they receive their assignments for the launch from Sasaki - Makoto will be in Police Robo, Susumu will pilot Gyro Robo, Tsuyoshi will remain with Siren Galley and Alice will ride the train. When Makoto and Alice clash again Sasaki tells them their attitude could lead to a disaster, though both continue to sulk with the Utada twins and the Machine Robo caught in the middle. The other teams watch on TV as the train beings its' maiden journey, but Alice is too busy fretting to notice when the train driver announces the Takion has reached a world record 700km/h. At that moment the cockpit is taken over by a trio of strange characters, who claim there is a bomb onboard that will explode if the train's speed drops below 200km/h. Police Robo and Gyro Robo give chase. The two henchmen meanwhile move through the carriages to find the railway director, demanding something called the "SC data". He tells them it's not on the train but in a bank vault - one that needs his fingerprint and voice to open. Unsure, they take him to The Boss to explain. Alice is then able to startle the inept hoods, convincing them she's fleeing from a monster - distracting them long enough for her to brain the pair of them with a fire extinguisher. Above, Gyro Robo lowers Makoto towards the train successfully - startling the passenger who had been sitting next to Alice before feeling ill, and is unaware that the train had been hijacked. Alice meanwhile finds the bound director, pretending to be his daughter but the redheaded lead crook is not taken in, and her goons revive. She wonders what exactly to do with Alice.

Just then Makoto reaches the cabin and easily takes out all three of the criminals before grabbing the detonator. They tell the pair that the bomb is a fake given to them by someone else but Gyro Robo notices from the outside that it is real. Alice and Makoto realise they were given the bomb by Jay, just as he appears overhead in Stealth Robo. Another passenger overhears and begins to spread panic, so Alice commandeers the address system and informs them that Machine Robo Rescue are on hand and will save them. Back at Rescue Headquarters, Chief Bitou examines the options with Sasaki. Gyro Robo believes the bomb can be defused and Susumu volunteers to be lowered down to do it - though the train only has 15 minutes left before it runs out of high-speed track and has to drop below 200km/h, and this will not be enough time to evacuate the passengers. However, Gyro Robo estimates they'll need 30 minutes for the work. However, Taiyoh points out they can divert the train to a circular testing track to gain more time - if they can connect the tracks. Meanwhile, after terrorising the unfortunate unwell passenger again, Alice is lifted off the train by Gyro Robo as Susumu is dropped off. She is switched to Siren Galley along with Tsuyoshi, and they begin transforming it to Siren Galley Robo, which is able to successfully transfer the train to the test track. Police Robo and Gyro Robo switch to their Hyper Modes to help before a blast from Stealth Robo destroys the track ahead. However, thanks to Taiyoh's intuition telling him which wire to cut Susumu is able to defuse the bomb and the train is able to brake before it hits the damaged section. Nevertheless Jay is satisfied with the data he and Stealth Robo gathered even if the hijacking itself was a failure. Later, both Makoto and Alice admit their faults and agree to respect each other more in the future. For her part Alice declares that she joined Machine Robo Rescue as she felt the silver screen was too small for her talent.

Continuity notes[edit | edit source]

  • The Superconductive Liner Express service Takion can reach speeds of 700km/h, and is replacing the SE-Alpha.
  • Taiyoh and Lin once again use rock-paper-scissors top make a decision - though this is only over who picks the TV channel.
  • The appearance of Siren Galley Robo is less off-putting than that of Wing Liner Robo in "Industrial Complex Panic!" as Siren Galley hasn't been in action much thus far, but again it's not mentioned as an option by anyone until Alice uses the name during her impromptu broadcast. Like Wing Liner Robo the conversion involves two cadets manually turning wheels to complete.
  • The hapless passenger who spends the whole emergency on the toilet is revealed to be Junichi Mizushima, father of the similarly cursed Jun, in the episode "MRR 24 Hours".

Real-world references[edit | edit source]

  • The terrorist's plan is based on the bus that had to speed around a city, keeping its speed over fifty, in the movie The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down.
  • The unnamed female train-jacker bears more than a passing resemblance in style to Carmen Sandiego, though obviously with nothing like the intelligence, and her two underlings look like dimwitted hoods from any number of 1980s anime series.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • While the film is intentionally nonsensical and OTT, the plot seems to involve Alice's dolled-up character being manipulated by an adult character and then double-crossing him seems inappropriate considering she's about 10.
