{{Disambig3|Challenge of the GoBots}}
'''''Challenge of the GoBots''''' is an animated television series that ran from [[1984]] to [[1985]], produced by [[Hanna-Barbera]], in support of the [[Tonka]] ''[[GoBots (toyline)|GoBots]]'' toyline. The series consisted of 65 episodes, and aired in syndication as part of the ''{{w|Funtastic World of Hanna-Barbera}}'' programming block. Initially distributed by Hanna-Barbera's sister company Worldvision Enterprises (both owned by Taft Broadcasting; Worldvision was sold on and eventually was absorbed into Paramount Television), the series (as part of the entire HB library) was later acquired by [[Warner Brothers]] (along with all other Turner Entertainment assets) in [[1996]].

==Overview==
[[File:CotG title card.jpg|left|thumb|250px]]
''Challenge of the GoBots'' launched with a five-episode mini-series written by animation veterans [[Alan Burnett]], [[Jeff Segal]], and [[Tom Ruegger]], which aired daily in the fall of 1984.<ref>Sources differ on ''when'' in the fall, exactly; the Warner Brothers website claims it premiered on September 8, a date popularized in online databases like Wikipedia, but this is actually impossible, because September 8, 1984 was a ''Saturday'', and as a mini-series, "Battle for GoBotron" would have aired Monday-to-Friday. Other sources, backed up by the research of writer [[Jim Sorenson]], propose an October 29 debut; these are the dates GoBots Wiki goes by.</ref> The mini-series—which would later use the title of the pilot episode, "[[Battle for GoBotron (mini-series)|Battle for GoBotron]]," as an overarching name when released on VHS—introduced audiences to the core six [[GoBot]] characters around whom the series would revolve, as [[Guardian]] commander [[Leader-1]] led [[Scooter]] and [[Turbo]] to [[Earth]] in pursuit of [[Renegade]] leader [[Cy-Kill]] and his minions [[Crasher]] and [[Cop-Tur]]. Allying with [[human]] astronauts [[Matt Hunter]], [[Nick Burns]], and [[A.J. Foster]], the Guardians thwarted the plans of Cy-Kill and evil human scientist [[Zebediah Braxis|Doctor Braxis]] to enslave the minds of every human on Earth and conquer the GoBots' homeworld of [[GoBotron]] with an army of mass-produced duplicates of the monster [[Zod]]. The mini-series featured, in various capacities, the majority of GoBot characters from the initial wave of the toyline from 1983, and also introduced recurring human allies [[Anya Turgenova]] and [[General Newcastle]].

[[File:CotG renegade trio.jpg|right|thumb|250px]]

A full series of sixty episodes was soon commissioned to follow up the mini-series, giving the series 65 episodes total—the "magic number" that would get the series into weekday syndication. Segal remained as creative supervisor and story editor for the series, joined by rookie associate story editor [[Kelly Ward]], who took the job to pay the bills while his acting career was in a lull; together, the two men co-conceived the stories of roughly two-thirds of the show's episodes, which were produced at such a pace that they often accepted first-draft scripts from the individual screenwriters which they then re-wrote themselves. Animation for the series was provided by Taiwanese-American studio [[Wang Film Productions]], overseen by supervising director [[Ray Patterson]], while voice direction was carried out by industry-defining master [[Gordon Hunt]] and his protege [[Andrea Romano]].

[[File:CotG guardian trio.jpg|left|thumb|250px]]

The new episodes debuted in September 1985 and ran until December of that same year. GoBotron and Earth were now allied, with the humans from the pilot mini-series serving as representatives of the global organization [[UNECOM]], the United Earth Command. While the Guardian and Renegade trios from the mini-series remained the focal characters, the series managed to include the majority of characters from the second 1984-1985 wave of the toyline. While some characters appeared very sparsely, others attained positions as prominent recurring members of the show's supporting cast, appearing in around a third of the episodes, like the junior "fourth" member of Leader-1's team [[Small Foot]], Guardian Council head [[Zeemon]], high-ranking Guardian [[Path Finder]], and Cy-Kill's loyal lieutenant [[Fitor]]. The series was almost wholly unconcerned with continuity (see "Episodes" below for more details), with characters dropping in and out seemingly at random, until the last handful of episodes, which introduced a clutch of characters from the upcoming 1986 range of figures.

A second season of the series was not produced, but it was followed on in 1986 by the theatrical movie ''[[GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords]]'', which featured the established core cartoon cast in an adventure that served to set up Tonka's spin-off toyline, ''[[Rock Lords]]''.
[[File:QuestforNewEarth secret riders.jpg|right|thumb|250px|[[Throttle]], [[Tri-Trak]], and [[Twister]]—three members of the [[Secret Riders]] whose introduction in the final episodes of the series was fraught with continuity problems.]]
This list is ordered by episode airdate, which is how the series was released on DVD, but which is not the show's correct chronological story order. Though the series was not given to continuity, as broadcast, certain story beats occur out of order; this is primarily noticeable in the case of episodes #41-45, a five-part story (later titled "[[The GoBotron Saga]]" when released on VHS) which was clearly written to serve as a stage-setting premiere for the series proper. In addition to exploring the origins of the GoBots (which went unremarked on in the original mini-series), the story has the Renegades escaping capture following their arrest at the close of "The Final Conflict," and provides origin stories for the [[Monster GoBot]]s and the Guardian [[Power Warrior]] [[Courageous]], who would all appear often in the series from its earliest broadcast episodes.

The first dozen or so episodes which follow the pilot are peppered with several similar moments, such as Doctor Braxis appearing in "Genius and Son" when he will not be shown escaping jail until "Nova Beam." The last half-dozen episodes of the series, meanwhile, introduce and prominently focus on a selection of new characters from the 1986 toy range, but none of them aired in order, with characters appearing before their introductory episodes. Among these is "Mission: GoBotron," which despite airing as episode #60 seems intended to serve as a season finale.

There have been multiple attempts to organize the series into a watchable chronological order; [http://counter-x.net/gobots/challenge/index.html long-time ''GoBots'' fansite Counter-X] offers [http://counter-x.net/gobots/challenge/episodes/index.html one suggested viewing order], while ''[[Transformers]]'' Facebook column "{{t|Ask Vector Prime}}" proposes {{t|Source: Ask Vector Prime/Facebook#December 21, 2015|another}}. [[List of Challenge of the GoBots episodes/story order|GoBots Wiki has devised its own list]], largely for our use in creating character articles, rather than to be used as a viewing guide.
As was the standard for cartoons of the time, ''GoBots'' featured one large, unchanging list of voice actors that was included in the credits for every episode, many of them regulars in the Hanna-Barbera stable of talent who did not go on to greater recognition among the bigger, more popular toys-to-toons series of the 80s. A significant number of the credited performers were one-shot guest actors, brought in to voice a single incidental human or alien, rather than a recurring GoBot, but exactly which characters many of them played is presently unclear—a situation {{SITENAME}} will endeavor to improve as we grow. Those credited actors are:
Barring any potential oversights by the production team, this list includes all the actors who appeared in the series up to the episode that had last been recorded when the credits had to be assembled for the series premiere. As the last 15-20 episodes of the series were recorded ''after'' that point, however, any ''new'' actors who joined the series for those episodes (such as [[Dick Gautier]], [[Jack Angel]], [[Bill Woodson]] and [[Dan Gilvezan]]) went uncredited, which makes identifying the performers behind any new characters from the final act of the series a more challenging prospect.
==Continuity==
{{main|Challenge of the GoBots/Continuity}}
''Challenge of the GoBots'' has a lot of problems with continuity. Like, ''a lot'' a lot.

==International versions==
{{main|Challenge of the GoBots/International releases}}
The series was exported to numerous countries, including the [[Great Britain|United Kingdom]], [[France]], [[Australia]], [[Germany]], the [[Netherlands]] and [[Argentina]].

Just as ''The Transformers'' cartoon had been imported to Japan and the franchise had supplanted the original toylines that had inspired it, the possibility of bringing ''GoBots'' to Japan was also considered. However, instead a home-grown anime was produced to promote the ''Machine Robo'' toyline, ''[[Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos (cartoon)|Revenge of Cronos]]'', in 1986.

==Sequels==
Though Hanna-Barbera did not produce a second season of the series, other efforts have been made to continue its story.
{{main|Revenge of the GoBots}}
''Les Defi des GoBots'' was a sizeable hit in France. This led to importing the ''[[Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos (cartoon)|Revenge of Cronos]]'' cartoon and re-dubbing it as ''Revenge of the GoBots'', re-imagining several of the ''Machine Robo'' characters as members of the ''Challenge'' cast, though beyond the use of the same names and voice cast no serious attempt seems to have been made to connect the two in terms of continuity. The series was broadcast in [[1987]] but does not seem to have been a success.
{{main|Transformers Timelines}}
From 2007 to 2016, ''Transformers'' license holder [[Fun Publications]] continued the adventures of the GoBots in intermittent installments of their ''[[Transformers Timelines]]'' series. These stories followed the Guardians and Renegades as they scattered across the ''Transformers'' multiverse when a mysterious [[cataclysm]] threatened their universe with destruction.
{{main|Renegade Rhetoric}}
From 2015 to 2016, Fun Publications also offered a more direct continuation of the cartoon through the "[[Renegade Rhetoric]]" column on Facebook. Taking place in a separate continuity to the ''Timelines'' stories which also spun off from the cartoon, "Renegade Rhetoric" showed audiences a world where a complete "second season" of the cartoon existed, as Cy-Kill related sixty-five new prose adventures consistent in plot and tone with 1980s children's television. These stories included many obligatory of-the-time plots like characters growing to gigantic heights, travelling to bizarre futures, being turned into humans, saving Christmas, protecting the environment, and teaming up with the [[Harlem Globetrotters]], and even featured a more dramatic five-part premiere mini-series and two-part season finale. All the remaining figures from the ''GoBots'' toyline—including both those who had not appeared in the original cartoon, and those which had not been released at all—were included in the stories, as were new characters based on ''Machine Robo'' toys that were never imported by Tonka.
:Ambulance Robo was the 15th figure in [[Bandai]]'s ''[[Machine Robo Series]]'' and transforms from robot to {{w|Nissan Caravan}} ambulance. Ambulance Robo has shoulder and knee articulation, though the latter is of limited use as the figure overbalances easily if the legs aren't locked solid. Sadly due to being almost entirely white, vintage examples of the toy often yellow easily. Like the rest of the range, the figure retailed at ¥600.
:*The figure was later issued as the ''[[GoBots (toyline)|GoBots]]'' figure [[Rest-Q#Toys|Rest-Q]], with the additional sticker sheet omitted. This means the American release does not have the red cross on the roof/legs, the red markings on the shoulders or the rear window markings. The Japanese text on the side stickers was also changed to English.
==Synopsis==
[[File:BattleHackersE12-035.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
[[Twincam Jimmy]] (ridden by [[Akira Amachi|Akira]]) and [[Rotary Kid]] (piloted by [[Zen Ogawa|Zen]]) are being chased around a gigantic scrapyard by the [[Gurendos]] [[Sitappa]]s - much to Jimmy's disgust, as muck keeps getting blown onto his bodywork by Kid's blades. Zen regrets even going on the mission, having volunteered himself and Akira to join the pair largely to impress [[Patricia Longfellow|Patricia]], who is becoming frustrated at the group being stuck on [[Electronic Planet B-1|B-1]] with little to do. Airborne [[Teppodaman]]s now take up the chase, pursing them towards missile batteries set up by [[Kariagen]], but Twincam Jimmy evades them. However, there are plenty more traps afoot, and the Gurendos drop a huge abandoned chunk of a spaceship towards them. [[Gakurandar]] and Kariagen celebrate their demise. Back in the [[Algo Republic]], Patricia tells [[Header]] she is worried about Akira and Zen while [[Mia White|Mia]] hangs out with the other [[Wheelmen]] as they build new weapons and generally try to annoy her. [[R. JeTan]] meanwhile is sitting brooding on top of the base when a mechanical wasp arrives and plays a message from Gakurandar, boasting of his captives - the scout team actually survived the attack, though they're trapped and battered. They overhear the Gurendos stating that they've laid a trap for R. JeTan when he arrives with the [[Battle Hackers]].
[[File:BattleHackersE12-072.jpg|240px|thumb]]
Zen is unable to get a radio working to warn R. JeTan; instead they can only send a simple signal and hope they're found. The scheme has been devised by [[Dylan]] - the computer that gives the Gurendos their orders. It threatens to have Gakurandar send into space and destroyed if he is not successful this time. Back in the Algo Republic, R. JeTan is reluctant to tell the other Battle Hackers of the message. Realising it is likely a trap he sets off by himself, not wanting to get his team trapped as well. When he arrives Gakurandar surrounds R. JeTan with fire before sending Sorikondar and Suji to attack him. He fights them off but Gakurandar sends in a huge number of Sitappas and Teppodamans. Zen hears the commotion and Rotary Kid is able to locate R. JeTan with his scanners. Gakurandar meanwhile is able to throw his cloak over the tiring R. JeTan and headbutt him, with Sorikondar and Kariagen then piling on. However, Rotary Kid is able to lead Twincam Jimmy, Akira and Zen to the surface and they prevent the Gurendos delivering a killing blow. The odds are still against them until the other Battle Hackers show up, [[Mach Blaster]] having tracked R. JeTan. Gakurandar calls a retreat and the Battle Hackers get back safely - however, all Patricia and Mia do is complain how badly the rubbish-caked scout party smell - though Zen is able to win Patricia over by giving her a flower he found in the middle of the trash.
The '''Sitappa''' (シタッパー) is a mass-produced unit used by the [[Gurendos]] on [[Electronic Planet B-1]]. They handle ground operations and have a casualty rate of around 200%. As well as fighting with rifles and occasionally swords they are used for any menial job going, being just as horribly out of their depth driving trucks and lugging stuff as they are in battle.
The '''Winner Robo''' were an assortment of figures in the ''[[Machine Robo: Battle Hackers (toyline)|Machine Robo: Battle Hackers]]'' toyline, released by [[Bandai]] in [[Japan]] during [[1988]]. They were the last "classic" ''[[Machine Robo]]'' figures issued before the line went on a five-year hiatus.

The figures converted through a spring-loaded mechanism activated by a button on the chest (though a couple required additional manual finishing moves) and were around the same size as [[Machine Robo Series]] toys. Each had ''Hot Wheels''-style through-axle wheels and a uniform chassis width. This was to allow them to interact with the [[Roboshooter Gaiden]] playset, while their similarity in size saw the [[Big Trailer Robo]] mould reissued as the mail-away tie-in [[Thunderer]], a car carrier which could transport the figures.

Unlike other toys of the period with automatic transformations, such as the {{t|Jumpstarters}} or {{t|Battlechargers}}, the Winner Robo stand out for high quality, still using a large amount of diecast, retaining compact and detailed vehicle modes and largely conventional robot modes; the only real compromise being the blocky lower legs.
The groups then linked up with the [[Battle Hackers]] and the speed of the Winner Robo was crucial to freeing the workers from the yoke of [[Kariagen]], with the Winner Robo being launched across the defensive perimeter of mines the Gurendos had put in place. {{storylink|A New Machine Robo Team Appears!}} The team then joined the Battle Hackers. When the [[Renegades]] and [[Zebediah Braxis|Doctor Braxis]] needed the synthetic energy crystal sorium for their [[pulsar generator]] and head to Stolbovoy Island where its' inventor, the brilliant Russian scientist Anya Turgenova, was conducting her research. The Guardians and their human allies overhear their communications and head out to intercept but [[Thruster]] arrives first and [[Zod]] scared off the Red Army garrison guarding the island. The Renegades easily captured her and took the sorium crystals before the Guardians arrived and a battle broke out. Anya attempted to escape but was recaptured by [[Crasher]] before she was trapped in a cave with [[Leader-1]], [[Matt Hunter]], [[A.J. Foster]] and an unstable sorium crystal as [[Cy-Kill]] and [[Cop-Tur]] left the island. {{storylink|Target Earth}} [[Turbo]], [[Scooter]] and [[Nick Burns]] were able to rescue them with the [[Command Center]], Leader-1 having used his forcefield to save them. Despite her rescue, Anya remained convinced the whole business was an imperial American plot. Leader-1 asked Matt to take her to [[Cheyenne Mountain]] to warn the US military of the threat, a situation neither of the humans were particularly enthused with. With no option they went along but thanks to [[Geeper-Creeper]] the base was already under the command of Cy-Kill, and the pair fell under the influence of the pulsar generator. Onboard Geeper-Creeper, Anya joined the human race in hunting down the Guardians. {{storylink|Conquest of Earth}} While Leader-1 was captured, Turbo and Scooter remained free, later releasing Matt, A.J. and Nick from Renegade control too. Matt and Turbo then set off to rescue Anya, managing to grab her from among the controlled humans. {{storylink|Earthbound}} Matt was able to restore Anya to her normal self and she was able to help them given Leader-1 a power boost after his run-in with Zod. The Guardians and their allies were then able to get inside Cheyenne Mountain and begin to overthrow the Renegades, with Anya even grabbing a gun to help Leader-1 and Matt knock Cy-Kill off a gantry. With the Renegades defeated and their armada of Zods destroyed when Leader-1 uses the [[Astrobeam]] to send unstable sorium into their midst, she shared a kiss with Matt before the Guardians and their human friends decided to run for it on the Command Center rather than explain everything to [[General Lindley]] and the rest of the Cheyenne Mountain staff. {{storylink|The Final Conflict}}
[[File:EscapeFromElba026.jpg|240px|thumb]]
If Anya's romance with Matt went any further they remained professional in the workplace as both worked with the newly-formed [[UNECOM]], where she became one of the organisation's foremost brains, realising that contrary to Soviet propaganda the West wasn't particularly evil. She was present at [[UNECOM Headquarters]] when Scooter and Nick called in with a sighting of an uncharted Renegade base before they were shot down and stranded on a primitive world. Unlike [[General Newcastle]] she was concerned about the pair being in danger. {{storylink|Dawn World}} She later devised the new [[Enigma Device]], a signal scrambler created for UNECOM, but it was soon stolen by the Renegades. {{storylink|Forced Alliance}} Anya would still return to Russia, and reported to UNECOM when Cy-Kill raided a mine in the country, a development that helped push Leader-1 into ordering a comprehensive search for the Renegade mothership ''[[Roguestar]]''. {{storylink|Quest for Roguestar}} She was again at the UNECOM HQ when Cy-Kill used [[Trindle]] technology to send all the personnel inside asleep, before they were eventually thwarted by the Guardians and their allies [[Trevor]] and [[Troilene]]. {{storylink|The Renegades' Rampage, Part II}}
[[File:FitorToTheFinish074.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
Anya was then one of the major brains behind the robot warrior [[Sentinel]]; however, as soon as the machine came online it decided humanity was inferior and needed to be wiped out, as these things often do. She reported on her invention's path of carnage as it was manipulated by Cy-Kill before finally being battled by the Guardians in [[Courageous]] and then leaving the planet to chase the treacherous Renegades. Not her best day. {{storylink|Sentinel (episode)|Sentinel}} After Cy-Kill was captured by the Guardians she was present as [[Fitor]] and [[Geeper-Creeper]] tried to persuade UNECOM they were defecting to the Guardians. As such they allowed Anya to use a [[stealth device]] they were handing over on herself; she found the sensation curious and looked forward to examining it more closely. However, like the Renegades' defection it was all a trick and the device blew after only a couple more tests, by which time Cy-Kill had escaped with the ersatz defectors. {{storylink|Escape from Elba}} Again working for UNECOM, she oversaw a new state-of-the-art surveillance facility - however, it was soon targeted by Fitor, [[Bad Boy]], [[Stinger]] and [[Stallion]]. Anya joined the Guardians and their allies in defending the base, grabbing a gun and opening fire on the Renegade attackers. Fitor was captured but while repairs were undertaken on the base Cy-Kill, Cop-Tur and Crasher captured Scooter, Matt, Anya, Nick and A.J. to barter in exchange. Despite Cy-Kill attempting to double-cross Leader-1 at the subsequent prisoner exchange Anya and the others were eventually able to get free. {{storylink|Fitor to the Finish}}
Anya attended the International Convention of Scientists in Desert Springs, where she was targeted for kidnap by Doctor Braxis and the Renegades. The disgraced scientist waited in her room, planning to hide her in her packing case and smuggle her to the waiting Cop-Tur but Nick was able to warn Anya before she entered her room. Instead Matt is able to overcome Braxis and put him in the case, which is then taken by the unwitting Cop-Tur. {{storylink|The Aliens Steal a Scientist}}

Later she was back in Russia working on something called Project X when she investigated dinosaur sightings in [[Siberia]] along with Brigadier [[Boris Bulkanikov]]. Unknown to them, Project X had been targeted by Cy-Kill and the dinosaur was in fact the new Renegade weapon Zod, which shot down and swallowed their plane. The pair were then used as hostages, with Cop-Tur threatening to kill the humans if the Guardians didn't surrender [[Battle Armor 5|Battle Suit]]. Throughout all of this Bulkanikov seemed more concerned with the sleights against his authority and Anya's friendships with Westerners, while Anya was more practical, attempting to warn the Guardians about the existence of Zod. Thankfully the Renegade charged with crushing the humans was Cop-Tur, and when Turbo said they would had over the Battle Suit he immediately let the captives go, allowing them to run to safety while the Guardians simply attacked the Renegades. The pair were then returned to Russia, with Anya convincing Boris to keep the whole escapade from their superiors. {{storylink|The Capture of Comrade Boris}}
* The original [[Battle for GoBotron (mini-series)|mini-series]] seems to set Anya up as a regular and a romantic foil for Matt but she only made a handful of appearances in the regular series, with her relationship to Matt and OTT Communist stereotyping dropped. Nevertheless, she remained visible in the title sequence throughout the show's run.
* Initially the series was coy about where exactly Anya was from, merely describing her as an "Eastern bloc" scientist before "Quest for Roguestar" finally confirmed her as Russian.
* Despite being canon Russian, her surname (with that spelling) originates from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.<ref>https://forebears.io/surnames/turgenova</ref>
* The introduction to the 1986 annual describes Anya as being "in her twenties", which given the nature of the book is likely taken from the series bible.
When the [[Renegades]] and [[Zebediah Braxis|Doctor Braxis]] needed the synthetic energy crystal sorium for their [[pulsar generator]] and head to Stolbovoy Island where its' inventor, the brilliant Russian scientist Anya Turgenova, was conducting her research. The Guardians and their human allies overhear their communications and head out to intercept but [[Thruster]] arrives first and [[Zod]] scared off the Red Army garrison guarding the island. The Renegades easily captured her and took the sorium crystals before the Guardians arrived and a battle broke out. Anya attempted to escape but was recaptured by [[Crasher]] before she was trapped in a cave with [[Leader-1]], [[Matt Hunter]], [[A.J. Foster]] and an unstable sorium crystal as [[Cy-Kill]] and [[Cop-Tur]] left the island. {{storylink|Target Earth}} [[Turbo]], [[Scooter]] and [[Nick Burns]] were able to rescue them with the [[Command Center]], Leader-1 having used his forcefield to save them. Despite her rescue, Anya remained convinced the whole business was an imperial American plot. Leader-1 asked Matt to take her to [[Cheyenne Mountain]] to warn the US military of the threat, a situation neither of the humans were particularly enthused with. With no option they went along but thanks to [[Geeper-Creeper]] the base was already under the command of Cy-Kill, and the pair fell under the influence of the pulsar generator. Onboard Geeper-Creeper, Anya joined the human race in hunting down the Guardians. {{storylink|Conquest of Earth}} While Leader-1 was captured, Turbo and Scooter remained free, later releasing Matt, A.J. and Nick from Renegade control too. Matt and Turbo then set off to rescue Anya, managing to grab her from among the controlled humans. {{storylink|Earthbound}} Matt was able to restore Anya to her normal self and she was able to help them given Leader-1 a power boost after his run-in with Zod. The Guardians and their allies were then able to get inside Cheyenne Mountain and begin to overthrow the Renegades, with Anya even grabbing a gun to help Leader-1 and Matt knock Cy-Kill off a gantry. With the Renegades defeated and their armada of Zods destroyed when Leader-1 uses the [[Astrobeam]] to send unstable sorium into their midst, she shared a kiss with Matt before the Guardians and their human friends decided to run for it on the Command Center rather than explain everything to [[General Lindley]] and the rest of the Cheyenne Mountain staff. {{storylink|The Final Conflict}}
[[File:EscapeFromElba026.jpg|240px|thumb]]
If Anya's romance with Matt went any further they remained professional in the workplace as both worked with the newly-formed [[UNECOM]], where she became one of the organisation's foremost brains, realising that contrary to Soviet propaganda the West wasn't particularly evil. She was present at [[UNECOM Headquarters]] when Scooter and Nick called in with a sighting of an uncharted Renegade base before they were shot down and stranded on a primitive world. Unlike [[General Newcastle]] she was concerned about the pair being in danger. {{storylink|Dawn World}} She later devised the new [[Enigma Device]], a signal scrambler created for UNECOM, but it was soon stolen by the Renegades. {{storylink|Forced Alliance}} Anya would still return to Russia, and reported to UNECOM when Cy-Kill raided a mine in the country, a development that helped push Leader-1 into ordering a comprehensive search for the Renegade mothership ''[[Roguestar]]''. {{storylink|Quest for Roguestar}} She was again at the UNECOM HQ when Cy-Kill used [[Trindle]] technology to send all the personnel inside asleep, before they were eventually thwarted by the Guardians and their allies [[Trevor]] and [[Troilene]]. {{storylink|The Renegades' Rampage, Part II}}
[[File:FitorToTheFinish074.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
Anya was then one of the major brains behind the robot warrior [[Sentinel]]; however, as soon as the machine came online it decided humanity was inferior and needed to be wiped out, as these things often do. She reported on her invention's path of carnage as it was manipulated by Cy-Kill before finally being battled by the Guardians in [[Courageous]] and then leaving the planet to chase the treacherous Renegades. Not her best day. {{storylink|Sentinel (episode)|Sentinel}} After Cy-Kill was captured by the Guardians she was present as [[Fitor]] and [[Geeper-Creeper]] tried to persuade UNECOM they were defecting to the Guardians. As such they allowed Anya to use a [[stealth device]] they were handing over on herself; she found the sensation curious and looked forward to examining it more closely. However, like the Renegades' defection it was all a trick and the device blew after only a couple more tests, by which time Cy-Kill had escaped with the ersatz defectors. {{storylink|Escape from Elba}} Again working for UNECOM, she oversaw a new state-of-the-art surveillance facility - however, it was soon targeted by Fitor, [[Bad Boy]], [[Stinger]] and [[Stallion]]. Anya joined the Guardians and their allies in defending the base, grabbing a gun and opening fire on the Renegade attackers. Fitor was captured but while repairs were undertaken on the base Cy-Kill, Cop-Tur and Crasher captured Scooter, Matt, Anya, Nick and A.J. to barter in exchange. Despite Cy-Kill attempting to double-cross Leader-1 at the subsequent prisoner exchange Anya and the others were eventually able to get free. {{storylink|Fitor to the Finish}}
Anya attended the International Convention of Scientists in Desert Springs, where she was targeted for kidnap by Doctor Braxis and the Renegades. The disgraced scientist waited in her room, planning to hide her in her packing case and smuggle her to the waiting Cop-Tur but Nick was able to warn Anya before she entered her room. Instead Matt is able to overcome Braxis and put him in the case, which is then taken by the unwitting Cop-Tur. {{storylink|The Aliens Steal a Scientist}}

Later she was back in Russia working on something called Project X when she investigated dinosaur sightings in [[Siberia]] along with Brigadier [[Boris Bulkanikov]]. Unknown to them, Project X had been targeted by Cy-Kill and the dinosaur was in fact the new Renegade weapon Zod, which shot down and swallowed their plane. The pair were then used as hostages, with Cop-Tur threatening to kill the humans if the Guardians didn't surrender [[Battle Armor 5|Battle Suit]]. Throughout all of this Bulkanikov seemed more concerned with the sleights against his authority and Anya's friendships with Westerners, while Anya was more practical, attempting to warn the Guardians about the existence of Zod. Thankfully the Renegade charged with crushing the humans was Cop-Tur, and when Turbo said they would had over the Battle Suit he immediately let the captives go, allowing them to run to safety while the Guardians simply attacked the Renegades. The pair were then returned to Russia, with Anya convincing Boris to keep the whole escapade from their superiors. {{storylink|The Capture of Comrade Boris}}
* Despite being canon Russian, her surname (with that spelling) originates from Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.
* The introduction to the 1986 annual describes Anya as being "in her twenties", which given the nature of the book is likely taken from the series bible.
'''The quest for the Wolf Sword steps up.'''
{{Discotek}}
==Synopsis==
[[File:ROC4002.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
[[Rom Stol|Rom]], [[Drill Robo|Rod Drill]], [[Pro Truck Racer]], [[Heli Transer]] and [[Magna Rock]] are investigating an old temple that has been heavily damaged by avalanches. Magna Rock uses his phasing abilities to go on alone, and inside he finds the fourth element of the [[Hyribead]] - the other [[Wolf Sword]]. He takes it outside to Rom but [[Garudi]] is waiting for them with [[Baldas]], [[Zarios]] and [[Falgos]]; [[Baikanfu]] holds the Gyandlar off and orders the others to take the sword back to the [[Battle Base]]. After defeating [[Devil Satan 6]], Baikanfu duels with Garudi before the ground collapses and the pair fall down into the earth. [[Diondra]] coolly orders that the pair are left while they follow the newly-discovered sword. All of this is observed by a [[Header|transforming head]] being carried around by a pterodactyl. Drill's party take refuge in a forest but are attacked by tentacled plant life, with the [[Varigale-X]] hovering overhead searching for them.
[[File:ROC4003.jpg|240px|thumb]]
They decide they have to fight back against the tentacles, drawing Diondra's attention; she takes the sword from Magna Rock and begins bombing the group before escaping in the Varigale-X. Below, Baikanfu switches back to Rom but Garudi finds his Wolf Sword first and manages to get out, leaving Rom to his fate. Drill's team come across the head from earlier being chased by the Devil Satan 6 and decide to help, aided by [[Falcon Robo]] and an army of [[Jet Tribe]] troops who have set out to look for them. They attack the Varigale-X but Diondra is able to get away and deliver the sword to [[Gadess]]. Rom is saved by more strangers - who introduce themselves as the Fossil Men. Back at the Gyandlar mother-ship [[Grujios]] realises the sword Diondra captured is a fake; the real thing is embedded in the combined form of the Fossil Men, [[Gattai Saurer]], who pledge to aid Rom. However Rom's own sword is still in the hands of the enemy; Garudi's success enrages Diondra, who plans to send her secret weapon [[Phenomena]] into battle.
==Synopsis==
[[File:ROC362.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
The Rock People join [[Rom Stol|Rom]]'s forces on the [[Battle Base]] and [[Ruby Man]] alludes to there being a third Jewel Robo - [[Amber Man]], who is currently enjoying a peaceful retreat in a forest. Near the Battle Base, [[Cross Rock]] is being pursued by [[Diondra]]; his absence is noted by [[Triple Jim]], so [[Jet Robo|Blue Jet]] and [[Phantom Robo]] set out to find him. They spot Amber Man's fortress and inform Rom; [[Dia Man]] and Ruby Man warn them that Amber Man enjoys solitude and is disinterested in the war; he attacks Jet and Phantom Robo, who lose contact with the Battle Base. The activity is spotted by [[Grujios]], who informs [[Gadess]]. Rom, Jim, [[Leina Stol|Leina]], Dia Man and Ruby Man set out to find Jet and Phantom Robo. On finding his fortress Rom goes in alone, leaving the [[Wolf Sword]] with Leina to prove his peaceful intentions to Amber Man. However, this development is also observed by the [[Gyandlar]]. Inside his tower, Amber Man has Diondra, Jet and Phantom Robo imprisoned, refusing to release them because of their warlike behaviour. Rom is attacked by Gyandlar when he reaches the tower, their stray blasts hitting the walls; Amber Man mistakes the blasts as an assault by Rom and activates the defences, incapacitating them inside crystals with the others. This causes the Wolf Sword to glow and Leina runs towards the tower realising something must have happened to Rom. Amber Man dismisses Rom's pleas to join the fight for [[Cronos]] but Cross Rock appears and tries to explain the situation. Just then [[Garudi]] bursts in, having evaded the defences, freeing Diondra. They persuade Amber Man to tell them about the [[Hyribead]] by claiming to be a force for good. He tells them the secret can be found from four elements of the [[Hyribead]] - the [[Dragon Helmet]], the [[Lion Shield]], a [[Wolf Sword]] and his own [[Phoenix Armor]]. This information discovered, Diondra attacks him and calls in reinforcements, while outside [[Drill Robo|Rod Drill]] has also arrived with a squad of troops. Amber Man summons [[Rockgiran]] and [[Rockdon]] to fight off both sets of attackers but Leina and Jim are able to slip into the fortress anyway.
[[File:ROC363.jpg|240px|thumb]]
Rod attempts to prove his good intentions by helping Rockgiran damage the [[Varigale-X]] - only for the monster to join Rockdon in attacking his troops. Inside, Garudi and Diondra try to find the Phoenix Armor while Leina frees Rom, Jet and Phantom Robo. Jim walks into Garudi but is saved by Rom in the form of [[Baikanfu]]. Diondra confronts Amber Man, demanding to know the location of the Phoenix Armor; his shock causes Rockdon and Rockgiran return to being inanimate stone. Rod's team breach the fortress but Diondra breaks up the battle between Baikanfu and Garudi, threatening to kill Amber Man if Rom doesn't surrender. The fortress begins to collapse; faced with Baikanfu and the reinforcements the Gyandlar retreat. Amber Man wants to stay and die with his tower but Baikanfu is able to convince him to help their cause when he realises how much Rom and his allies care for each other. He gifts the Phoenix Armour to Rom as a result.
Girandor used a [[baltonium]] bomb on the [[Rainbow Sands]] despite [[Tank Transer|Trim Sponsor]] and [[Rudi]] being present. Rudi was killed and Trim was fatally poisoned, while the Rainbow Sands were permanently mutated. Still alive and furious at Girandor, Trim stole the remaining baltonium from Arambia, which he placed in the care of an android modelled after Rudi. When Trim was met by [[Rom Stol]], his sister [[Leina Stol|Leina]], [[Drill Robo|Rod Drill]], [[Jet Robo|Blue Jet]] and [[Triple Jim]] he would not let them see Rudi and generally acted erratically, sending them into a lethal area of the desert. They survived and visited Girandor, who told them a twisted version of the story which painted Trim as a criminal. The group set out to bring him in and get to the bottom of the dispute but Trim died of the baltonium bomb's after effects. However, the travellers examined the copy of Rudi, finding a recording where Trim had detailed the truth. [[Kenryū]], Rod and Jet confronted Girandor, but he converted into a giant monster antlion. Kenryū then changed to [[Baikanfu]] and was eventually able to match Girandor before throwing him into the red sands - where the evil king was instantly destroyed. {{storylink|Dash Out, Tank Trancer!}}
==Synopsis==
[[File:ROC352.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
The new [[Battle Base]] mobile fortress is ready and [[Bike Robo]] is training troops to man it while [[Drill Robo|Rod Drill]] and [[Jet Robo|Blue Jet]] oversee supplying the fortress. [[Rom Stol|Rom]] and [[Pro Truck Racer]] are escorting a convoy with further munitions when they spot [[Magna Rock]] being pursued by [[Devil Rock]] and [[Double Rock]] so they intervene, saving him. They take Magna Rock back to the Battle Base, where he explains he has escaped from the [[Devil Cave]] where another prisoner is trapped. Rom, Drill, Pro Truck Racer, [[Triple Jim]] and [[Leina Stol|Leina]] - after an argument with [[Min]] - set off with him to help. Meanwhile, on the [[Gyandlar]] mothership [[Grujios]] tells [[Gadess]] of the three powerful [[Jewel People]], and the Gyandlar plan to capture them. [[Diondra]] sets off in the [[Varigale-X]] with [[Devil Satan 6]], having deduced that Magna Rock came from Devil Mountain. Magna Rock has led Rom's party to the cave and they enter shortly before Diondra's team arrive. The mountain's defences activate, destroying [[Gildis]] and [[Zarios]] while blocking off the entrance.
[[File:ROC353.jpg|240px|thumb]]
Rom and the rest are bound by tentacles but the unaffected Magna Rock is able to save them with the [[Wolf Sword]]. The Gyandlar meanwhile decide to make their own entrance - watched from within the mountain itself by [[Mask Rock]]. Rom's party reaches the buried stranger - [[Ruby Man]], another of the Jewel People; Rod and Pro Truck Racer are able to free him and Leina spots the [[Wolf Emblem]] carved into the rock he was buried under. Ruby Man shows his gratitude to his rescuers by instantly healing the wounds they suffered entering the mountain. Above, Diondra blasts an entrance, causing the cave to start collapsing so Rom summons [[Baikanfu]] to clear an exit for his party but the Gyandlar are waiting for them. They demand Ruby Man goes with them and are about to attack when Jet arrives with the reinforcements summoned by Mask Rock, forcing the Gyandlar into retreat. A furious Gadess orders Grujios and Garudi to recover the Jewel People as soon as possible. Back at the Battle Base, Rom and Mask Rock cement their alliance; unnoticed by everyone except Magna Rock, Ruby Man goes to see the [[Dragon Helmet]], which glows in his presence.
'''''Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos''''' (マシンロボ クロノスの大逆襲 ''Machine Robo: Cronos no Dai Gyakushū'') was a [[1986]]-[[1987]] cartoon commissioned by [[Bandai]] from [[Ashi Productions]], the first to be based on the ''[[Machine Robo]]'' brand.
{{TOCclear}}
==Overview==
===Production===
''[[Machine Robo]]'' had been running in Japan since [[1982]], with minimal media support—some short manga storylines had been published and a rough mythos was formed between these, the line's toy commercials and pack-in media. However by the mid-1980s anime was becoming more and more necessary to support successful toy lines and so [[Bandai]] decided to apply the treatment to Machine Robo. They engaged [[Ashi Productions]]—known for much of recent history as Production Reed, though they have since reverted their name—to produce an all-new anime series. A relatively young studio, Ashi had worked on ''Space Warrior Baldios'', ''Special Armoured Battalion Dorvack'' and—with Bandai—''[[Dancougar|Dancouga: Super Beast Machine God]]''; they also contributed some animation to ''M.A.S.K'' for Kenner. Ashi chose to ignore the storyline of the original line, and produced a 'pilot' reel for the series that saw a full series commissioned. Many of the key staff for the show had worked together on ''Dancougar'', including series director [[Hiroshi Yoshida]] and character designer [[Nobuyoshi Habara]]. [[Hideki Sonoda]] was appointed head writer
[[File:ROCLeads.jpg|240px|thumb]]
Ashi relocated the entire cast to the alien planet of [[Cronos]], where the Machine Robo were split into four tribes of sentient robots:
*[[Cronos Tribe]]: Machine Robo who looked human and were largely treated as such. The Cronos tribe were represented mainly by series lead [[Rom Stol]]—the smallest component of the [[Baikanfu]] toy; the other two configurations were used as his power-up bodies—and his sister [[Leina Stol]], who was not part of the toyline.
*[[Jet Tribe]]: Machine Robo figures who turned into aircraft. [[Blue Jet]]—based on the original 1982 Jet Robo figure (used as [[Fitor]] in the West) was their representative among the show's leads.
*[[Battle Tribe]]: Basically all the other transforming figures, ranging from sports cars to submarines. Two Battle Tribe figures were part of the show's core cast—[[Rod Drill]], based on the original Drill Robo toy ([[Screw Head]] in the West) and [[Triple Jim]].
*[[Rock People]]: Turned into rocks. These were based on the same figures issued for [[Tonka]]'s ''[[Rock Lords (toyline)|Rock Lords]]'' line in the West. In the cartoon they were split up into two groups—those who helped the Machine Robo and those who helped their enemies. The [[Jewel People]] and [[Fossil Men]] were further subsets of Rock People.
[[File:ROCGrujiosGadessDiondra.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
The [[Devil Invaders]] were replaced by the [[Gyandlar]], a huge army of invading aliens led by [[Gadess]]. He and his lieutenants [[Diondra]], [[Grujios]] and [[Garudi]] were all invented specifically for the anime, as were the numerous Gyandlar captains which were a fixture of early episodes as one-shot villains. This wasn't unusual for even a toy-based anime like ''Revenge of Cronos'' as 'enemy' toys had traditionally fared poorly on the Japanese toy market. However the large [[Devil Satan 6]] combiner figure (recoloured in the West as [[Monsterous]]) was featured regularly as the Gyandlar's prime muscle. Initially it was joined by a menagerie of beasts devised by Ashi and then later by the [[Gyandlar Devils]]—the old Devil Invader designs being incorporated in the show as generics.

[[File:ROCPoster.jpg|200px|thumb]]
===Broadcast===
''Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos'' began broadcast on 3 July 1986 on the TV Tokyo network with a new episode each Thursday at 7.30pm. Initially the show had a loose quest format featuring Rom, Leina, Triple Jim, Rod Drill and Blue Jet searching the planet for Wolf symbols while foiling various plans of the Gyandlar to kill them or learn the secret of the symbols themselves. They travelled from settlement to settlement on Cronos, which seemed to be largely modelled on feudal Japan. Guest characters in the early episode were largely drawn from the Cronos Tribe—and when Battle or Jet Tribe characters did show they were often given bizarre, arbitrary cameo roles. Early on it was also standard to see characters that weren't actually featured in the toy line, Ashi having seemingly been given character models for all extant Machine Robo.

Midway through the series this focus changed considerably. The show gained a semi-regular setting in the shape of [[Emerald City]] and later the [[Battle Base]], the plot was made more solidly arc-based and toy-based characters became a lot more visible. Roles for the other Battle and Jet Tribe characters—notably the expensive [[Tough Trailer]], [[Pro Truck Racer]] and [[Land Commander 5]] figures—were beefed up, Cronos generics largely disappeared and the Gyandlar's Ashi-devised troopers were replaced almost entirely by the Gyandlar Devils. Rom, Leina, Jet, Drill, Jim, Gadess, Garudi and Diondra remained the leads of the series during this period but their presence was less dominating.
The show finished naturally after 44 episodes, with three clip show episodes rounding out the run in May 1987.

The series ''may'' have been planned at 52 episodes, a more common length for a Japanese cartoon of the period (Japanese shows of the period were made in "cours", blocks of 12-13 episodes; a series completed without interruption is therefore usually some multiple of those numbers); French dub ''[[Revenge of the GoBots]]'' was announced as having 52 episodes and it remains a mystery what the other five would have been had that version not been cancelled. It is possible ''Revenge of Cronos'' was truncated, either due to low ratings or Bandai wanting to promote the newer ''Battle Hackers'' figures. While no major plot threads were left dangling at the end of ''Cronos'' there is undoubtedly a rushed feeling to the coda that sees most of the series' cast leave the planet at the end of the final regular episode.
==Reception==
The series seems to have gone down moderately well with contemporary audiences. ''Animage''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [https://web.archive.org/web/20101019174520/http://animage.jp/old/gp/gp_1987.html 1987 Anime Grand Prix survey] saw the series rated as 20th best of the year by readers, with [[Rom Stol]] as 19th best male character and [[Leina Stol]] as 14th best female character. Leina was the only element of the series to be placed [https://web.archive.org/web/20101019175132/http://animage.jp/old/gp/gp_1988.html the following year], ranking as 13th best female character.
==Style==

Bandai and/or Ashi don't seem to have laid down much in the way of rules which can lead to a lot of confusion when watching the series; as such a few basics about the Machine Robo as shown in the series probably need clarifying.

===Multiple Machine Robo===
[[File:ROCMultipleSubs.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
One of the most baffling aspects of the series is the way the toy-based Machine Robo are actually utilised. Some—such as series leads Rod Drill, Blue Jet and Triple Jim—we only see one example of. Others—most notably Submarine Robo, twenty-odd of which are seen on-screen in their only appearance—are obviously widely used body types. Throwing things into the mix are the names used; some [[Machine Robo (faction)|Machine Robo]]—such as Trim Sponsor, Vilion or Pithus—are given individual names. Others are just referred to by their toy names—for example [[Bike Robo]], [[Fire Robo]] or [[Apollo Robo]]; occasionally the 'Robo' bit is dropped, but not consistently.
In between there are some strange grey areas that can cause confusion. [[Combat Buggy]] for example first appears as a named guest character and reappears for the mid-season two-parter. Later on a Combat Buggy is seen onboard the [[Battle Base]] in several scenes; is it the same guy or someone different? There's nothing solid to say either way. Even more confusing are the characters who get fairly unambiguous deaths (such as [[Phantom Robo]] or [[Skyline Robo]]) and then turn up again later without any reaction or explanation, yet are only ever seen one at a time. And then there's the likes of [[Supercar Robo]], who is seen as a criminal in [[Bug Newman]]'s gang and then as an elderly-sounding scientist.

In short there seem to be very few hard and fast rules set and it's best to judge on a case-by-case basis. Unless there's a solid reason to think otherwise it's fair all the actions of a Machine Robo are the actions of the same guy, for reasons of neatness if nothing else.

===Genders, Relationships and Families===
[[File:ROCPithusAndSara.jpg|240px|thumb]]
Cross-Tribe relationships seem normal—Blue Jet (Jet Tribe) courts [[Rury]] (Cronos Tribe), Combat Buggy (Battle Tribe) gets with [[Melodia]] (Cronos Tribe), [[Tough Trailer]] (Battle Tribe) has a thing for [[Diondra]] (Gyandlar), Apollo Robo (Jet Tribe) fancies Leina (Cronos Tribe) and so on. Apart from Diondra the only females seen are Cronos Tribe (that we know of, anyway—it's always possible that some of the non-speaking Battle and Jet Tribe characters are female) with the exception of [[Sara]].

Family units also exist, though again solid information is scattered across the series. The Stol family are the most obvious example; while no mother is seen or mentioned [[Kirai Stol|Kirai]] is clearly the father and his three children Rom, Leina and [[Guardi Stol|Gardi]] are seen, though they are aliens. The kids get bigger at some point after their arrival on Cronos and the implication is there that they grow—this sort of thing is complicated by Ashi largely treating the Cronos Tribe as humans up until the point they get torn apart and there are circuits everywhere. Sure, metal beings that grow with age aren't especially scientific but ''Revenge of Cronos'' dabbles with a lot of stuff that is closer to fantasy or even magic. Much the same conclusions can be drawn around whether Machine Robo reproduce sexually or build new robots and program them—on the one hand the latter is probably the most sensible explanation but it's not always a particularly sensible show; Combat Buggy is in a relationship with someone the size of his leg.

Other siblings seen are the brothers [[Pro Truck Racer]] and Tough Trailer, but most family units shown are Cronos Tribe. There are a couple of exceptions—small, chibi-style versions of Supercar Robo, Skyline Robo and Battle Rock are seen as children on a couple of occasions, usually with dialogue making it obvious they're kids and not just midgets. The most curious character from this point of view is Sara, resident of Cleo City. She is the daughter of town chief Pithus, a [[Bulldozer Robo]], but outwardly resembles a Cronos Tribe female. However, she transforms into a scooter. What exactly this means—whether her mother is/was from the Cronos Tribe, whether she was just build this way by Pithus and so on—is unclear but she's the exception to just about any rule you can come up with.

===Physiology===
[[File:ROCIckleWickleBabyTurbo.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
Beyond being metal robots it's difficult to tell what exactly Machine Robo are. They all seem to be sentient beings with a full range of emotions, though there's absolutely no clue to the origins of the species in the cartoon. Most seem to have basically good personalities and the species doesn't seem particularly warlike, often being very passive and easily quelled by the Gyandlar invaders. Few seem to have natural fighting skills—the most formidable are generally those trained by off-worlder Kirai Stol. Apart from some who turn into military vehicles they have no built-in weaponry, being reliant on rifles or swords. They are able to eat, drink and sleep—how much of this is actually necessary is unclear as these actions were generally played up for comedy value, being Rod Drill's favourite pastimes that no-one else seemed to bother with.

How big the Machine Robo actually are is open to conjecture as the entire series takes place on an alien planet with nothing that's definitely the same size as it is on our world. If Rom was 6ft tall that would make the average Battle or Jet Tribe member only around 8–10ft tall. There isn't much cheating with mass shifting but toy size seems to play a bigger role in how big a character is than the size of their alternate mode—[[Shuttle Robo]] and [[Police Car Robo]] are roughly the same size in both modes despite one being a space shuttle and the other a police car; Pro Truck Racer towers over both as his toy was much larger even through he turns into a truck cab and should still be much smaller than a Shuttle. There is the odd exception – notably [[Battleship Robo]]—but it's the closest thing to a constant.

Most Battle/Jet Tribe members can take a Cronos Tribe pilot but then any example that would really show this up as a scale problem—someone piloting Blackbird Robo, for example—is avoided, possibly intentionally; notably when they need a shuttle to go into space the larger [[Big Shuttle Robo]]—who is roughly the same size compared to Rom as a real Space Shuttle would be to a human—is pressed into action.

===Vehicle Modes===
Why do so many Machine Robo turn into recognisable Earth vehicles if the show is entirely set on an alien planet? Good question. In ''[[Challenge of the GoBots]]'' the question was vaguely hand-waved as it was hinted that Gobots had been to Earth in the past and had some ability to monitor the planet. The people of Cronos have no idea Earth even exists; it might not in this fictional universe, so it's impossible that the same is true. So it's either parallel evolution or best not thought about.
==Music==
{{main|Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos (OST)}}
Incidental music for the show was composed by [[Tachio Akano]]. As is common for anime series, ''Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos'' had pop songs as start and finish music. In this case, they were performed by the artists of the [[Futureland]] label. Music videos for all the songs featured in the show, along with a comedic short named "[[Leina's Holiday]]", were compiled into an OVA called ''[[Memories of the Battlefield]]'', released on April 22, 1987—timed to coincide with the end of the series.

==Sequels==
{{main|Machine Robo: Battle Hackers (cartoon)}}
The series ended with the regulars and assorted friends crossing a dimensional gate, at which point the cartoon's universe branched. A selection of characters were 'reborn' with no memories as the population of [[Electronic Planet B-1]] in the ''Battle Hackers'' series.
{{main|Leina Stol in Wolf Sword Legend}}
Meanwhile the Stol siblings and the star characters were span off into an OVA series mainly focusing on [[Leina Stol]]. These bore very little resemblance to ''Machine Robo'' but do—sadly—continue the ''Revenge of Cronos'' storyline.
* ''[[Leina Stol in Wolf Sword Legend I]]'' (released 5th February [[1988]])
* ''[[Leina Stol in Wolf Sword Legend II]]'' (released 4th September 1988)
* ''[[Leina Stol in Wolf Sword Legend III]]'' (released 26th April [[1989]])
* ''[[Lightning Trap: Leina and Laika]]'' (released 23rd May [[1990]])

==Overseas==
*In France, where ''[[Challenge of the GoBots]]'' had been a huge hit, the ''Revenge of Cronos'' cartoon was imported and dubbed as ''[[Revenge of the GoBots]]'' ("La Revanche des GoBots"). The dub renamed characters to reference the French version of ''Challenge of the GoBots''.
*The first 15 episodes were released in North America by [[Central Park Media]] with English subtitles. The subtitles notably called [[Baikanfu]] "Vikung-Fu" and [[Kenryū]] "Blade Dragon", changes which have never caught on with the fandom.
===Laserdisc===
*{{main|Toshiba EMI}}
Eight episodes of the series were released as ''Machine Robo: Revenge of Cronos Best Collection 1'' and ''2'' in [[1989]], before the entire series was released in a single huge, expensive boxed set in [[1990s#1992|1992]].
===VHS===
Central Park Media released two tapes containing five subtitled episodes apiece in [[1990s#1997|1997]] via their Software Sculptors imprint.
*{{main|Pioneer}}
Pioneer released the entire series across two box sets in Japan on 8 June, [[2000s#2001|2001]].
In [[2003]], Central Park reissued the two volumes they had issued on VHS on Region 1 DVD, followed by a third volume in [[2000s#2004|2004]] before the series stopped.
'''Akira Amachi''' (アマチ・アキラ) is a [[human]] from [[Earth]]. A former member of the crew of the ''[[Good Luck]]'', after the ship's arrival on [[Electronic Planet B-1]] he rapidly fell in with the [[Battle Hackers]].

In combat he pilots the [[Jet Riser]] battle suit or, as an avid motorcycle fan and capable mechanic, rides [[Twincam Jimmy]]. Akira is brave and seemingly indestructible, which is good as he's stupid on a truly colossal scale, which doesn't stop [[Zen Ogawa]] looking up to him as a big brother figure. He gets on well with [[Luke Stewart]] in a fire-and-ice way, seeming aware that Luke is the more sensible of the pair and usually deferring to him. He has an immature relationship with his two female comrades, usually clashing with the spiky [[Mia White]] and mocking the dim [[Patricia Longfellow]].
Akira was one of the crewmembers of the ''Good Luck'' placed in suspended animation, meaning he survived the ship's unintended journey through a wormhole that seemingly wiped out the rest of the crew bar Luke, Mia, Patricia and Zen. He was revived just as the vessel touched down on [[Electronic Planet B-1]]. They almost immediately ran into the [[Gurendos]] captain [[Kariagen]] and were chased further into the ship, where Akira's general chaotic reaction was of little help. He armed himself with twin pistols and made for the ship's shuttle bay along with Mia and Patricia to use an escape shuttle. However, Kariagen found them; Akira and Mia were rescued by [[Drill Crusher]] but Patricia was accidentally left behind. {{storylink|Burning Electronic Planet}} The pair were reunited with Luke thanks to [[Pro Truck Racer]] and the two males soon took a shine to the [[Riser Suits]] brought into battle by [[Tough Trailer]]. However, he was mocked for this by [[Hot Rod Joe]], who even juggled the puny human to make his point. Drill Crusher was also less than certain of Akira's attempts to pilot the Jet Riser, even giving him a slap to discourage him. Nevertheless after being taken back to [[Crystal City]] he and Luke sneaked out in the night, stealing the Jet Riser and [[Battle Riser]] in order to go and rescue Patricia from the ''Good Luck''. {{storylink|Jet Riser! Scramble!}} Their impromptu mission might have ended in disaster if [[Mach Blaster]] hadn't gone against [[RIM]]'s orders and led a [[White Thunder]] force to rescue them. Akira then gave Mach Blaster some attitude and got thrown into a bush as a result, though ultimately he agreed to help rescue Patricia and the revived Zen. While he was doing so Akira used the Jet Riser to recover the black box from the ''Good Luck'', allowing the humans to later learn of the circumstances that led them to B-1. {{storylink|Heavy Wind, Mach Blaster!}} He was later onboard [[F-One Jack]] when the [[Wheelmen]] and the humans were attacked by [[Sorikondar]] and [[Suji]], who blew up the road they were travelling on; they were saved by the Battle Hackers and met [[R. JeTan]] for the first time. {{storylink|Strongest Warrior - R.JeTan!}}

[[File:AkiraBH2.jpg|240px|thumb]]
Akira's love of bikes was used against him by the treacherous [[Kizune]], who used his motorcycle to tempt him away and capture him along with fellow spy [[Gantsuke]]. Akira was knocked out and the pair planned to brainwash him and use him against the [[Algo Army]], but he was rescued by the Battle Hackers before they could complete their plan. {{storylink|Crystal Eavesdropping Strategy}} By now he was determined to join the Battle Hackers but they were again worried about his ability. Akira once again took control of the Jet Riser and was able to pay a role in alerting the team to [[Devil Satan 6]]'s attempts to destroy the crucial bridge into Crystal City, greatly impressing R. JeTan and the other Battle Hackers, who allowed him to join them. {{storylink|Jet Riser - Full Fire!}} This caused some discord with his fellow ''Good Luck'' survivors, who wanted to concentrate on returning to Earth. Patricia and Mia returned to the ship to try and find out more information but it was infested with Gurendos and damaged beyond repair. Akira and the Battle Hackers rescued the pair and destroyed the ship to prevent the Gurendos using it against them. {{storylink|Return to the Good Luck}} In the Jet Riser, he was sent out on patrol along with [[Garzack]], F-One Jack and Hot Rod Joe, where his impetuous attempt to get them out of a Gurendos ambush nearly saw himself and Garzack destroyed, and did cause the latter to lose his [[Garfire-SP]]. The Gurendos used the captured weapon for an assault on Crystal City but Akira redeemed himself by acting as bait so the Battle Hackers could recapture the gun - even if his scheme saw the hair scorched from the centre of his head. {{storylink|Stolen Garfire-SP}}
[[File:AkiraBH3.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
He took to joining the Wheelmen in their races during downtime and was later part of the team sent to recover [[Rotary Kid]] and [[Twincam Jimmy]]. His mechanical skills greatly endeared him to the later after he was able to give him field repairs, and Akira would ride Twincam Jimmy into battle, with the pair thwarting Sorikondar's plans to destroy a city. {{storylink|Rotary Kid and Twincam Jimmy}} He was later volunteered by Zen to accompany the young boy, Twincam Jimmy and Rotary Kid on a scouting mission. The group were cornered by a huge army of Gurendos led by [[Gakurandar]] and Kariagen as part of an attempt to draw R. JeTan out alone. The group managed to evade most of the attacks until an explosion dropped a huge structure on them. However, they survived and made their way back out in time to save R. JeTan from being overwhelmed. {{storylink|Muddy Duel}} He was later on patrol with the [[Winner Robo]] when Gakurandar prepared to bombard Crystal City with a super-gun; he and [[Eagle Winner|Jetter Robo]] investigated but were damaged by an aerial mine and stuck partway down a huge chasm. Jetter Robo was able to repair himself with parts of the Jet Riser and get a warning out. {{storylink|Dangerous Grand Whale}} When [[Yasand]] used mind control chips to take over many of the residents of Crystal City a controlled [[Steam Robo]] punched Akira in the face before being freed. He later helped Drill Crusher and [[Masa]] investigate and thwart Yasand's operation. {{storylink|Drill Crusher's Wrath}} Along with the Battle Hackers he returned to space to destroy Sorikondar and [[Suji]]'s mind-controlling satellite. {{storylink|Destroy the Fortress Satellite}} Later Akira was with the Battle Hackers when Sorikondar launched another attempt to wipe them out, cutting them off from the rest of the [[Algo Army]] with a minefield. Along with Zen and [[F-One Jack]] he was able to deactivate the mines, which were then attached to the Gurendos captain by Drill Crusher, ultimately killing him. {{storylink|R. JeTan! Run!}}
[[File:AkiraBH4.jpg|240px|thumb|right]]
Akira and Luke found their Riser Suits outmatched by the Gurendos' new [[Twin Deppo Daman]] soldiers so Mach Blaster took them for training with the suits' eccentric creator, [[Science]]. After easily defeating Akira in single combat, Science put the two humans through a punishing physical and mental regime to improve their performance and use of the suits. As a result the pair were able to defeat Yasand and [[Rikkimines]] in combat, though the Battle Hackers were amused when Mach Blaster told them of Akira's defeat and other indignities at the hands of Science. {{storylink|Riser! Power Up!}} Along with the rest of the Battle Hackers he was ultimately unable to prevent Yasand stealing a supply of electromagnetic missiles from the Algo Army {{storylink|The Stolen Secret Weapon}} Akira and Patricia infiltrated a Gurendos base to try and find out more about where they had the stolen weaponry. They unwittingly stumbled upon the launch site and Akira made a brave solo attack on first the launcher and then one of the missiles itself in the Jet Riser; however, he was ultimately unable to prevent it exploding over Crystal City, knocking out huge numbers of Machine Robo. {{storylink|Target: Grand Whale}} When more missiles launched he was more successful, being able to disable their propulsion. {{storylink|The Flower of Hope Blooming on the Battlefield}} Akira was later part of the Battle Hackers team sent out to retrieve a device that would restore the Machine Robo affected by the missiles. While they collected it successfully on the way back the convoy was whittled down by massed Gurendos assaults, leaving just Twincam Jimmy and Akira remaining until they were nearly hit by artillery. Jimmy was briefly knocked out within yards of the Grand Whale but Akira was able to drag it the rest of the way, enabling the Algo Army to counterattack successfully.{{storylink|Let's Do It!}}
[[File:AkiraBH5.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
He was also taken along when the Battle Hackers team sent to investigate a mysterious entity attacking miners under B-1's surface. Akira behaved with his usual decorum, shooting the substance with his laser cannon and later swallowing some, though he survived and recovered well enough to caper around in a bizarre fashion when Luka and Mia nearly kissed. Immaturity? Jealousy? Brain damage? All three? {{storylink|Break Through the End of the Earth}} During a desert battle with the Gurendos he, Luke and Mia took over an enemy tank and turned it on their forces, though he had to survive accidentally groping Mia first. {{storylink|Hot Sand Battle, Hurry Jet!}} Akira then worked with Mach Blaster when the Battle Hackers infiltrated and destroyed a huge mobile Gurendos base; however, the latter was captured after sacrificing himself to buy the rest of the team time to escape, much to Akira's distress. {{storylink|Captive Mach Blaster}} He was part of the assault on [[Blood Country]] to free the captive Battle Hacker but during the attempt Akira, Luke and Mia discovered a human spaceship inside the Gurendos base. There they found out the shocking truth about B-1 - that it was a human-built weapons testing site that had ran amok. Akira shut down the computer [[Dylan]] that worked with the Gurendos but Patricia and Zen were beamed onto the ship by RIM, and the craft was launched back to Earth before they could inform the Battle Hackers of their discovery. A distressed Akira vowed to return and free the Machine Robo as they left the planet. {{storylink|Goodbye - Battle Forever}}
* Akira is the only character to appear in every episode of ''[[Machine Robo: Battle Hackers (cartoon)|Machine Robo: Battle Hackers]]''.
* Reputedly at one stage Akira was planned as a reincarnation of [[Rom Stol]] before the decision was taken to spin the character off into the [[Leina Stol (OVA series)|Leina Stol OVA series]] instead.
* The pairing up of ''Akira'' with [[Twincam Jimmy]] as a biker-type, often with goggles and a laser rifle slung over his shoulders, may well have been influenced by ''{{w|Akira (1988 film)|Akira}}''; while the film wouldn't come out until the following year the trailer had been released and the manga version was already hugely popular in Japan. His voice actor [[Masaaki Ohkura]] would even voice Yamagata (Kaneda's lieutenant who gets killed by Tetsuro) in the film itself.
==Synopsis==
[[File:ROC222.jpg|240px|thumb|left]]
[[Leina Stol|Leina]], [[Rom Stol|Rom]], [[Jet Robo|Blue Jet]], [[Drill Robo|Rod Drill]] and [[Triple Jim]] come across the settlement of [[Gorgo]], devastated by the [[Gyandlar]]. The carnage greatly disturbs Leina, who runs off after questioning whether any warrior is any different to the invaders. Nearby, [[Diondra]] has the surviving townsfolk - mainly [[Battle Rock]] Rock People with a few [[Jet Tribe]] troops - working underground, believing the local mine contains the [[Hyribead]]. Instead the excavations uncover a hibernating creature named [[Rockdon]], which she plans to wake and use against Rom. Village chief [[Battle Rock|Java]] refuses to give her any information and the other villagers create a distraction so [[Falcon Robo]] can fly for help. He is caught in the woods by [[Geiger Rock]], [[Devil Rock]] and [[Double Rock]] after they give chase in [[Rock Commander]] vehicles but Rom's band arrives to save him; Geiger Rock is killed but Devil Rock escapes and on his way back to the village captures Leina. Meanwhile Rom, Jet, Drill and Jim agree to help Falcon Robo, especially when they hear about Rockdon.
[[File:ROC223.jpg|240px|thumb]]
Diondra threatens to begin killing the village's children and Leina if they don't tell her how to awaken Rockdon; the chief relents, telling the Gyandlar that soundwaves have to be used. They begin the process but are interrupted by the arrival of Rom and the others, who battle the Gyandlar but are unable to prevent Diondra from awakening Rockdon. [[Kenryū]] unsuccessfully battles the monster before merging to form [[Baikanfu]]; the larger robot has no more luck but their struggle reveals a second buried creature, [[Rockgiran]]. Java sacrifices himself to release it and the two monsters battle until they both merge into a single ball and return to their rest. Diondra escapes and the villagers are free.
The '''''Machine Robo''''' (マシンロボ ''Mashin Robo'') toyline featured several televised CMs (commercial messages) to advertise its' wares. So commercials, then.

As the line had little firm mythology these were on the abstract side, generally being made up of stop-motion animation of the figures transforming in diorama-style settings. Early commercials were narrated by [[Eiji Kanie]] and later [[Tessho Genda]].

==CMs==

[[File:MRSCM1.jpg|240px|thumb]]
===Machine Robo Series===
The first commercials mixed live action and stop-motion, featuring an actor in a shadowy futuristic room slotting very cool clear plastic "chips" into a machine that then brought up stop-motion conversions of some of the [[Machine Robo Series]] figures, complete with laser effects during conversion, their MR number and a computer number. It would then switch to panning shots of shelves absolutely packed with ''Machine Robo'' figures before a shot of vehicle mode toys moving out from a futuristic city

Various 30-second edits of this commercial were made - four versions were present on the ''[[Machine Robo Visual Records]]'' DVD, with different toys featured in the stop motion, including [[Bike Robo]], [[Jet Robo]], [[Gyro Robo]], [[Supercar Robo]] and [[Shuttle Robo]], while some shorter 15-second versions were also made. Each signed off with a still shot of the most recent releases in the line, including the [[ScaleRobo DX]] [[Psychoroid]].
{{-}}
[[File:BattleArmor5CM.jpg|240px|thumb]]
===Battle Base & Battle Armor 5===
The Battle Base in its' mobile mode comes under attack from an unseen enemy, transforming to base mode as the Machine Robo onboard roll out. Battle Armor 5's Command Jet appears overhead and converts to join the fray. As well as the 30-second version, a 15-second shorter version also exists. Similarly, a 15-second version that focuses entirely on the Battle Base was also made.
{{-}}
===Devil Invaders===
This mixed stop motion and cel animation created by [[Studio Pierrot]], the only known commercial to do so.
[[File:MachineroboWorldCampaign.jpg|240px|thumb]]
===Machinerobo World Campaign===
Stop-motion footage of [[Casmodon]] transforming, the Battle Base and Battle Armor 5 taken from the above, the [[Big Machine Robo]] standing by the [[Jet Garry]] and [[Combat Buggy]] plus information about the [[Machinerobo World Campaign]], including a demonstration of [[Ball Pen Robo]] and other items, all packed into 30 seconds.
{{-}}
[[File:MachinePuzzlerCM.jpg|240px|thumb]]
===Machine Puzzler===
Unlike the other commercials, this starts off with several painted frames telling the story of the battle between the [[Machine Robo (species)|Machine Robo]] of [[Romulos]] and the [[Devil Invaders]] of the [[Casmo Zone]]. It then switches to stop-motion footage of Casmodon attacking a city, with a first person view. The members of [[Machine Puzzler]] race into action in their car modes before transforming and heading up into the air, combining as Machine Puzzler to face the enemy. As well as the 30-second standard version a shorter 15-second edit was made.
Casmodon was built on [[Earth]] by [[Zod]] and forced human leader as the first of his planned Devil Invaders. The Guardians attempted a massed attack but their combined fire did not phase Casmodon and his eye-beams destroyed [[Night Ranger]] and [[Road Ranger|Truck]] when the Devil Invader returned fire. He further injured [[Dozer]] and drove the surviving Guardians in full retreat. Casmodon was a [[Gyandlar]] captain sent to oversee a mine take-over in [[Dakota]], where he was involved in the act of sabotage that led to Dakota and its' neighbour [[Konan]] as a cover for mining operations to search for the [[Hyribead]]. Casmodon was able to take advantage of the grief of Dakota's chief [[Bison]] and manipulate him, throwing suspicion on [[Rom Stol]], [[Leina Stol]], [[Jet Robo|Blue Jet]] and [[Triple Jim]] when they arrived in town. However, Bison's son [[Combat Buggy]] and [[Drill Robo|Rod Drill]] were able to expose the conspiracy and lead an uprising. Later massed numbers of Casmodon were one of the five [[Gyandlar Devils]] used by the Gyandlar. One was placed on guard duty in [[Cleo City]] to oversee the imprisoned Rom and [[Sara]], and suffered the indignity of being kicked off a building by Leina. {{storylink|The Heart of a Protecting Angel}} Casmodon later helped [[Diondra]] guard the captured Machine Robo from [[Battle Rock|Java]]'s village. {{storylink|Rockgiran versus Rockdon}} While one was destroyed attacking a convoy bound for [[Emerald City]] when it was forced onto the Red Sands approaching the city, Casmodon was a regular face in the Gyandlar attacks on the city. {{storylink|Gather All Machine Robo}}

:A plastic model kit version of Casmodon was issued by Bandai in 1985 as part of their ''Machine Robo Series'' line of Gashapon. Casmodon was part of the second series and retained his ability to transform. The model very closely followed the transformation of the Machine Robo Series version; while it included some stickers for detail the kit itself was cast in a single colour of purple plastic and would require extensive painting to look anything like the picture included on the leaflet.
:*The Gashapon figures were never issued outside of Japan.
==Notes==
*The [[Super GoBots]] version of [[Vamp]] was possibly initially planned as a Casmodon figure.
'''Jingi''' is a native of [[Cronos]] in the service of the [[Gyandlar]]. He is armed with twin horn boomerangs.

He is the father of [[Kina]] and [[Koron]].
Jingi was employed by [[Grujios]] to kidnap and interrogate [[Master Blade]] of the [[Leo Clan]]. While the first aim was achieved the Clan's chief refused to give his [[Gyandlar]] captors any information about the [[Hyribead]]. Soon afterwards the Gyandlar were attacked by Leo Clan troops led by [[Sophia]], shortly joined by [[Rom Stol]]'s group. Jingi found himself fighting Rom, but one of his attacks was blocked by Sophia, who was mortally wounded. The honourable Jingi gave Rom a moment to mourn before renewing his attack. Rom changed up to [[Kenryū]] and then [[Baikanfu]], eventually killing Jingi. {{storylink|Sophia, Warrior Woman of the Leo Clan}}

His children [[Kina]] and [[Koron]] tried to avenge their father by attacking Rom, even allowing the Gyandlar to turn them into [[Jingi Mark 2]] to achieve this goal, but were killed in the attempt. {{storylink|Burn and Run, Brother and Sister Warriors!}}

Jingi was resurrected when [[Gadess]] granted [[Grujios]] some of his power, which the lieutenant used to revive several deceased captains as part of a plan to use the [[Sky Castle]] to find out what [[Pylon]] knew of the [[Hyribead]]. {{storylink|Death in the Demonic Castle in the Sky}} The undead Jingi fought Kenryū again, along with [[Mizuchi]] and [[Zagam]]. However, Pylon was able to open a miniature black hole outside the Castle, sucking in Mizuchi and the rest of Grujios' zombie army.{{storylink|The Demonic Castle - Farewell Grujios}}

==Notes==
*In ''[[Burn and Run, Brother and Sister Warriors!]]'', Leina refers to Jingi as a yakuza gangster. Although the word ''jingi'' (仁義) has yakuza connotations, Jingi never particularly acted or spoke like a yakuza.
Lord '''Glovine''' is a native of [[Cronos]] in the service of the [[Gyandlar]]. He is a highly skilled samurai fighter and wields twin swords. While Glovine likes a fight he is not completely without honour.
Glovine studied at [[Rury]]'s dojo but grew impatient at the lack of combat and striking out on his own. As such he came into the pay of the [[Gyandlar]] and suggested the dojo as a possible source of information about the [[Hyribead]], having been visited by [[Kirai Stol]] 15 years before and bearing a [[Wolf Emblem]]. He travelled there with the [[Devil Satan 6]] but objected to their dishonourable treatment of Rury, to the extent of slicing a leg off [[Gillhead|One]] in disgust. They were forced to retreat by the timely arrival of [[Rom Stol]], [[Jet Robo|Blue Jet]] and [[Drill Robo|Rod Drill]]. Later he hatched a plan with [[Diondra]] and [[Garudi]], challenging Jet to a duel to draw him away from the dojo while the rest of the Gyandlar attacked. The head-to-head was hard-fought and Glovine dealt Jet considerable injuries but was eventually defeated; he was so impressed with Jet's performance that with his dying words he told his rival of the Gyandlar plan, allowing Jet to return in time to save his friends.{{storylink|Jet!
